Maritje "Maria" emmigrated between 1635 and 1638 either with her husband, Jacob Verdon, or without him as his widow. Maria was fifteen when she married Jacob. She could not read or write but due to his interests she became known as the wealthiest woman in New Amsterdam. An only child, she was a church woman endowed with glowing health and vibrant charm. She lived an extremely long life, and had three husbands and thirteen children. In 1643 the home of Maria and her second husband was destroyed by Indians. She gave a silver communion service to the Dutch Reformed Church at Brooklyn, and on the 3 Oct 1684 she donated two silver beakers to the Church, of which one has been preserved.
