Reubin Aldridge

(1829 - 28 Dec 1863)

Reuben served in Company K of the 58th AL Infantry. A card in his file at Fold3 states that Reuben Aldridge of Oliver's Co. Cox's Battn, appears on a roll of Co K, 58th AL Infantry. He is on the Register of deceased Officers and Soldiers from Alabama which were filed for settlement in the Office of the Confederate States Auditor for the War Department. The claim was presented by Elendore Aldridge, Widow, on 28 Dec 1863.

Found on a Civil War Message Board:
Captain Jesse J. Cox and Lt. Samuel D. Oliver of the Prattville Dragoons both tendered their resignations in the Spring of 1862 at Corinth, MS. According to Captain Wilbur F. Mims who compiled the "War History Of The Prattville Dragoons"....these two men recieved commands in the Infantry. I have found that Samuel D. Oliver became the Captain of Company E, 2nd Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters, subsequently Company K of the 58th Alabama Infantry Regiment, "Oliver's Company K".
Campaign. No. 250.--Reports of Maj. Jesse J. Cox, Second Georgia Battalion Sharpshooters. BRIDGEPORT, ALA., January 10, 1863.
Col. Dana M. Mangham's journal: "Cox's Wild Cats: The 2nd Georgia Battalion Sharpshooters
at Chickamauga and Chattanooga" confirms that Major J.J. Cox is indeed Captain Jesse J. Cox of the Prattville Dragoons. Cox went back to his Dragoon Officers when assigning commands for his new companies, Captain Oliver's Company E, and William Montgomery's Company that never joined the Battalion. Montgomery's Company was approved by Attorney General Watts & General J.K. Jackson, but almost immediately afterward, the Sharpshooter Battalion was reformed as a Georgia unit with Oliver's Company of Alabamians transferring out. Mangham thinks this reorganization may be why Montgomery's Alabama Company never joined the Battalion. He also thinks it had a significant impact on Cox's resignation in March of 1863, and not the "poor health" that he claimed.

Reuben died in September of 1863 in Hamilton County (Chattanooga), TN, at the Battle of Chickamauga. The battle was fought on September 19th and 20th. Burials were made in what is now the Chattanooga National Cemetery on the TN/GA border or where the soldier fell.
