Application for Bounty Land, War of 1812 Service, #61718. Rejected.
Leonard tried to claim his bounty land stating he had been a Teamster under his brother Capt. Joshua Hoskins in the New York Militia, Brinkerhoof, Paymaster. No pay evidence was ever found and he was repeatedly rejected. Brinkderhoof have never to have disbursed through the Quarter Masters Department. It is somewhat interesting that he and Silas both claimed, were both rejected.
31 Mar 1855. Leonard Hoskins was age 57, of Rockport, Cuyahoga Co, Ohio. Served as a teamster, under Capt Joshua Hoskins, 21 regt, NY Militia, War of 1812. He entered in Cuyaga Co (NY) in 1814 until discharged, 16 days. Acted as Teamster from Scipio to Buffalo under immediate command of Capt. Hoskins; discharged at Buffalo, have served at least sixteen days. Payment from Brinkerhoof, Paymaster. Never had a written discharge.
28 Mar 1857. Re-Examined. Mr. Brinkerhoof never disbursed on account of the Quarter Master's Dept. Name under who Hoskins served must be determined.
10 Apr 1857. Hillsboro, Montgomery Co, Illinois. Letter from Leonard Hoskins. Circumstances than and now wer such that the Quarter Master cannot be determind. My Brother Joshua Hoskins was Captain of the company of which I was temster in September 1814. The draftees received no pay for two years. He received no pay until Notice in the newspaper that Col. Brinkerhoof, was appointed by the Government to pay the militia. Capt Hoskins went to Auburn and received his pay and my pay through him. John L. Hardenburg was appointed to assist Col. Brinkerhoof. Capt. Joshua Hoskins served three months in 1813 after the burning of Buffalo - he received his pay at Buffalo before he returned home. My brother's oldest son, Alfred Hoskins lived in Janesville, Rock Co, Wisconsin. He could not have been over eight years, but says no occurrence in his life is more indelibly stamped than the memory of his father's service. He has been High Sheriff of Rock Co until Jan of 1857. He & his mother and two younger brothers saw his father get into the wagon and drive off to war. Thomas Bolton lived within two miles and he and his older brother know by general report that I went in 1814 as teamster. In September of 1814, a Capt Bosworth commanded a Company of Grenadiers - the teamster for his company was Mr. Herric.
4 Feb 1858. Seneca Co, Ohio John Shaw, aged 76 declared he was personally acquainted with Leonard Hoskins and was acquainted with him in 1814 and he knows that Hoskins was a Teamster in the Service of the US in the War of 1812. He entered in Cayuga Co in New York and served for 14 days. He, John Shaw, was in the service at the same as an orderly sergeant in the company of Capt. Joshua Hoskins and he has obtained a Land Warrant #57055 for his service.
and on the same day and place, John (X) ?McAdams/ Wadams age 71 years declared the same - that he was servine as a Corporal in the company commanded by Capt John Bosworth and had obtained a land warrant for his service.
12 Feb 1858. Montgomery Co, IL. Lenoard Hoskins, aged 60, a resident of Montgomery Co declared he was a Teamster in the service of the U.S. in the War of 1812. He served in Sep 1814, from Cayuga, New York for fourteen days. He received his pay through his brother Capt. Joshua Hoskins, who received from ___ Brinkerhood or John L. Hardenburg as he was informed by his brother. He was sick at the time the troops were paid. He made application for bounty land some three years since, but his application was suspended for want of proof of service.
25 Mar 1858. Re-examined. Col Geo. R. Brinkerhood was QuarterMaster for Genl. Geo. McClures Brigade, NY Militia. His account was examined without finding any evidence of payment to Leonard or Joshua Hoskins.

Post on Cayuga Co Message Board, 30 Dec 2002:
The following is from "A Hoskins Family Record" by Edwin Ray Hoskins (1963), page 6: "Leonard married Mary Bolton, sister of Eleanor Bolton Smead (See Sec. D). Leonard was very active in the settlement of his father's Will (See Sec. B). He then was located in Western New York. It might be possible to trace this family through the Bolton family in Cleveland, Ohio."
Sec. D. (page 37) of the above source gives the following in a footnote: "Allen Smead's wife was Eleanor Bolton, daughter of Thos. and Hannah Henry Bolton. They were married in Scipio [Cayuga Co., NY], April 11, 1813. Thomas and Hannah Bolton were received in the First Baptist Church of Scipio (now Venice) in 1807. The Boltons have a lot and monument in the Eddy Cemetery, Manchester Rd., Scipio. The files of E.P.H., Sr. [Edwin Perry Hoskins, Sr.] produced obituaries for former Judge Thos. Bolton and his son, Thomas Kelly Bolton of Cleveland, Ohio. A communication, dated Jan. 2, 1963, from Kenyon C. Bolton (son of Congresswoman Frances B. Bolton) shows a full eight-page genealogical record of this distinguished family of Ohio. Eleanor's sister, Mary, (b) Feb. 12, 1801, married Leonard Hoskins, son of Rev. War Samuel Hoskins."
The will of Samuel Hoskins, Sr., in Sec. B. (p. 28) of the above source, included the following: "justly I give and bequeath to my beloved son Leonard Hoskins the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars in two annual payments two years after my death."
