Individual Details

Parents may have been John & Sarah Lindley. They did have a son William born in 1770. However, I have seen the following wives also given for this William Lindley. One database shows him married to a Barsheba Rush or Blackshear; another states that he married Mary Pitts. The William Lindley married to Mary Pitts died in Illinois in 1833 in Pekin, Illinois.

Children of William & "Molly": John, William, Elijah, Jehu, Sally, & Jacob. [Email mentions a Bible record of a son.] Most of the databases give William Lindley as having died in 1816 in Franklin Co TN.

Will dated 9 Aug 1816, Franklin TN. Exact date of death not given. This is NOT the William Lindley that married Mary "Molly" Haden, daughter of William and Unity, if they had a daughter named Mary Haden. Copy of his will from Franklin Co TN gives his wife as Martha - which does not fit any of the above Wiliams. However, Lindley had wards named Archer, suggesting they were stepchildren, and Martha might have been a second wife. Our lady's name was definitely Molly in the North Carolina records - Molly was the traditional nickname for Mary, not Martha. There is no child named Mary Haden [to be Mary Haden Lindley who married Kuykendall] in this will, either. Also there does not seem to be a Jehu - the word John has an extra squiggle but definitely seems to be John.

In the name of God Amen:
I William Lindley of the County of Franklin and State of Tennessee being weak of body but sound in mind doth make & ordain this my last will and Testament that is to say first, I will that out of my Estate my four wards Michael, Robert, Jane & Obediah Archer be paid the sum of $101.25 as soon as it can be raised out of my Estate to be paid into the hands of their future Guardian for their use till they severally come of age or as quick as the money can be collected from ?Canader? And secondly I will that the balance of my Estate be sold to the highest bidder and when the family gets out to Indiana Territory, and then be equally divided betwixt my children that is to say William first, Alijah [Elijah], Alisha [Elisha], John, Sally & Jacob & wife Martha have an equal part with my children above named. [Perhaps from NC given that the wife gets a child's part - this was the law in NC]
It is to be observed that William is to have his part as soon as it is collected and further I do hereby nominate & appoint and constitute my son John Lindley Sole Executor of this my Estate last will and Testament Etc. Revoking all other wills made by me In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 9th August 1816.
