Individual Details
WILLIAM JENCKES
(Abt 1674 - 19 Jul 1765)
William Jenckes was the chief Justice of Providence County Court and Deputy to the Assembly at Newport in 1727. In 1734 he was Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. He served on the commission to settle the boundary dispute with Massachusetts, 2 Dec 1740.
His second wife was Mary Sprague Brown, a sister of the first wife Patience and widow of Daniel Brown.
28 Oct 1765. His inventory was presented to the Town Council by Jonathan and the widow Mary. Jonathan read the will and the widow, being present, did not accept it. Stephen Jenckes, a witness, testified that the deceased was in his right mind.
Provisions of the will: William Jenckes of Providence, a blacksmith, willed to his son William, also a blacksmith, a dwelling house where he now lived, in Providence at the west end with his one third part of the Smith shop at Pawtacket and his forge, along with Smiths tools and one half of the land bought of Nathanial Jenckes, and the Homestead lot, and wood lot, and his part of the meadow called Hall swamp. 14 Mar 1748.
[I suspect an error in the date of the will ....or perhaps it was written that long ago and that's why the widow rejected it. There also seemed to be no provision for the widow.]
It is believed he was buried in the Gov. Joseph Jencks Lot in Pawtucket, a cemetery that no longer exists. Inscription read, "William Jenckes, Esq. Who Departed this Life July the 19th, AD 1765; in the 93rd Year of his Age.
