Individual Details
Gideon Durfee
(Bet 6 Feb 1736 and 38 - 12 Sep 1814)
Gideon was an Ensign in Capt Daniel Dwelly's 2nd Tiverton Company, Newport County Militia from May 1765 to at least May 1767. In August of 1774 he was commissioned lieutenant of that same company. Smith's Civil & Military List of Rhode Island, Vol 1., p. 255, 259, 305.
When the RI 1777 Military Census was taken, Gideon was listed as 16-50 and able to serve.
In the Revolution he was a private in Capt. Peleg Simmon's Co, Col. Christopher Olney's Regt. From a muster Roll, Oct 8, 1781. He served on guard duty until Nov. 7, 1781. Sons Earle & Lemuel also served in the Revolution.
According to Phelps & Gorham Purchase, p. 380-382, his sons Gideon & Edward built a cabin & cleared six acres of land in what is now Palmyra in Wayne Co, in the summer of 1790. They returned to Tiverton and convinced their brothers Pardon & Job & their families to return to New York that fall. By the winter of 1791-92, the remainder of the family joined them. They were among the earliest settlers.
19 May 1791. Gideon bought 600 acres, East Palmyra, south of Mud Creek. The Durfee family cemetery where Gideon is buried was on a farm owned by Ira Lakey in 1877 - the first burial said to be a child of Gideon Durfee, Jr [in another place, Gideon's daughter Mary was said to be the first burial in 1794].
Much of the information on the Durfee family is from the diary of Allen Durfee (1802-1890). Allen was a son of Gideon's son Stephen.
