Individual Details
William Harmon
(Ca 1720 - 1740 - 1792)
William is in the Fox Squirrel District, Rutherford Co NC in the 1790 Census. He had 1 male over 16, 4 under 16, and 4 females in his household.
He is believed to have been in old Tryon Co by Jan of 1776 and in 1778 he was sold 100 acres in Rutherford Co by Isham Reavis. He is shown with several land holdings in the NC Land Grants, 1776-1778. His brother believed to be Micajah Harmon, also in the 1790 census.
William's wife was Mary, possibly Ross. They had as many as four sons, three daughters.
Prior to William the family becomes more speculative. William and Micajah are thought to have been the sons of John George Harmon, b. 1710, New Kent Co VA, and wife Elizabeth "Sally" Langston.
Children for John George Harmon listed as
Rebecca
Nancy
James
Micajah, b. 1753, Bruswick Co VA - d. 1832, Warren Co, KY, m. Lucy Ann Johnson
William, b. bet 1740-1750, d. 1792, Rutherford Co NC
Benskin, b. 1760, m. Elizabeth Doyle in 1794
John George, b. 1770, d. 1814, Kentucky
Lewis, b. 1772
Note: Online research suggests that this was George, not "John George" Harmon. He did have a son William who married after the family moved to Warren Co KY.
John George Harmon is said to probably be the son of one of the following two sons of William Harmon:
William Harmon, d. 4 Jan 1687/88, New Kent Co VA. Married Mary Benskin - there is apparently an English will of Mary's father, Henry Benskin, that proves this couple in Virginia. William and Mary married sometime bet 1645 and 1660. They are believed to have had two sons, William, b. abt 1660, and Benskin, b. say 1665. There is some evidence that Benskin Harmon died about 1703 in New Kent Co - if so, he could not have been the father of John George Harmon.
The data suggests that William, b. abt 1660, married late in life and was the father of John George, b. 1710, and another Benskin Harmon who was born about 1715. My guess is that there may be a missing generation between the William, b. 1660 & Benskin, b. 1665 and the later John George and Benskin, b. 1715.
There was a Richard Harman, age 20, who left the Port of London, 1 Jan 1634, on the ship "Bonadventure" bound for the Virginia Colony, ship's master James Ricrofte.
Records appear in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent. Richard and an unknown sife had a son William born by 1640. That is presumed to be the above William who married Mary Benskin.
A Thomas Harmon, b. London, England 1590-91, died 1647, is said to have had at least one, possibly two sons who were in Virginia Colony in the 1630's. The above Richard, and an Ellis Harmon, age 23, who sailed from London on the "Primrose", 27 Jul 1635. There are no details giving the source of this supposition.
