The institution now known as Duke University was founded in Randolph County, NC, in 1838, as Brown’s Schoolhouse. By 1859, it had been renamed Trinity College. Trinity College moved to Durham and what is now East Campus in 1892.
The first dean of Trinity College was William P. Few (1902-1910). He was President of Duke University 1924-1940.

Dr. Few married Mary Reamey Thomas of Martinsville, Virginia, on 17 August 1911. she was the daughter of Lyne Starling Thomas, a lawyer of Martinsville, and his wife Elizabeth Sheffield. Mrs. Few was a graduate of Duke University, class of 1906, and received a master’s degree from Columbia University in 1907. She survived her husband, dying in Durham, North Carolina, in 1971.
