Mary [Huff]

( - )

Mary may well have been a second wife to Samuel. It appears she lived for many years after he died. Perhaps she was not the mother of John, but his stepmother. Another researcher provided me with additional information about her.

Joseph Hale, named a daughter Mary Huff in his will written in Patrick Co VA in 1798 - proved in 1803. John Huff will appear on the same tax lists as several Hales, David Tittle and Thomas Porter (sons-in-law of Joseph Hale). Several of the same end up in Floyd County, KY. However, the age of Joseph Hale and his children suggests that no duaghter of his would have been old to have children circa 1770.

Mary Huff is on tax ists in Henry Couty from 1782-1790 and then in Montgomery County from 1792-1811. She made a deed in 1819 in Montgomery Co - perhaps had been exempted from tax lists because of age. Other Huffs and Hales are in both lists. In Henry and Montgomery Co at the same time were Mary Hiff, and the following Hales - Richard, James, Thomas and sometimes Peter & Benjamin, sons of Joseph Hale.
The tax lists reveals a white male age 16-21 in her household in 1787 and two white males of that age in 1788. In 1792, Joseph Huff is taxed on one horse, right after Mary Huff - likely a son coming of age. Is this a stepson coming of age (say born 1771) - he's near the age of John Huff.
