John White

(1595 - 1683)

John was the son of Robert White, yeoman, of Shelford, County Essex, England who had married 1585 in England to Bridget, daughter of William Alger. He came in the "Lyon" to Boston, 1632 and settled at Newtown (Cambridge). He was listed as a freeman in 1633 and one of the original proprietors of Hartford, 1636. He removed to Hadley in 1659 but returned to Harford by 1670.

He married Mary Levit in England, Messing Parish, Essex, 26 Dec 1622. Her name is barely readable but other instances involving Levits make it likely this was her surname. Children baptized at Messing Parish:
28 Dec 1623 John White, son of John White and Mary his wife
16 Jul 1626 Mary White, "
21 Dec 1628 Philip White, son of "

John and Mary also had a son Nathaniel. There is a lease in Hartford dated 28 Mar 1666, when John White and Mary his wife leased to their son Nathaniel, their premises, house and garden, reserving the use of two rooms therein for the term of the lives of said John and Mary, and of the longest liver whether John or Mary.

The book Passengers on the "Lion" from England to Boston, 1632, by Sandra Sutphin Olney, Heritage Books, Bowie Maryland, 1992, p.645 has four generations of John White's family.
