OBIT: Lafayette "Lafe" Philander Avery. L. P. Avery, 78, Of Camden Township, Died On Friday. L. P. Avery, 78, prominent retired farmer of Camden township, and a lifetime resident of Schuyler county, died Friday afternoon at Schmitt Memorial hospital, in Beardstown. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 1:30, at the First Methodist church in the city, with Rev. Harry S. Crede in charge, assisted by Rev. J. A. Mason. Burial was in the Rushville cemetery. Lafayette Philander Avery, commonly known as "Lafe" to his many friends, passed away Friday afternoon, April 29, at 1:30 o'clock, at Schmitt Memorial hospital, Beardstown. He had been a patient there for only a day and a half, but had been in failing health at his farm home since the month of November. Lafayette, only son of James Philander Avery and Martha Dixon, was born July 3, 1870 on the farm in Camden township. At the time of his death he was at the age of 78 years, nine months and 26 days. His entire lifetime was spent on the home farm, where he and his father were engaged in farming and the raising of livestock. In the year 1893, he was united in marriage to Louise Peters, and to this union was born one daughter, Ara Violet, on August 17, 1895. His wife passed away one year and a half later. On February 24, 1898, he was again joined in marriage, to Miss Hattie Miller of Brown county, with whom he lived in happy companionship for almost 52 years. To this union one son was born, James Louis, August 10, 1905, who has been a partner in farming with him for the last 25 years. He was converted in Chapel Hill church under the pastorate of Rev. Waters, about the yar 1910. From this time on he was a regular attendant of this church, and also Union Chapel. During the closing days of his life he derived much consolation from the promise of a home beyond the grave, whre there will be no more suffering and death. During his lifetime, Mr. Avery was affiliated with everything that was good, having been a very worthy friend to all who knew him. Whenever a helping hand could be lent for any worth-while purpose, to do so. Mr. Avery was a good neighbor in all that the word implies, and will be sadly missed in his community where he had lived his entire lifetime. He had been a member of the Masonic lodge for over 50 years. Besides many, many friends, surviving to mourn his passing are his widow, one daughter, Ara, who had resided at home, and one son, James Lewis; his two grandsons, Andrew Lafayette Avery and James Louis Avery, Jr., who will miss his undivided attention.
