James West

(27 Aug 1772 - Ca 1844)

There was apparently more than one James West. However, it would seem that Richard certainly had a son James. I have simply put all the references to a James here - some no doubt apply to a different James.

1795, Richard Westdeclared 3 white males [2 were over 21]

1796, Richard West had 2 white males over 21 and James West appeared for the first time, with three horses and no other property. There was no other "new" West in the tax lists. Not until 1807 does any other of the West males claim an extra white male and William West does claim two males over age 21 in 1807, but only for that single year.

1797, Richard West had 148 acres on the Red River, entered, surveyed & patented by him. James West had 100 acres on the Red River. On 15 Sep 1796, James West had a survey for 100 acres on the North fork of the Red River - this would seem to be this same tract.

The 1798 tax records are missing

By 1799, Richard still had the 148 acres on the Red River and had patented an additional 200 acres. James had added another 200 acres to his lands as well - entered and surveyed for Able Fike. There is a survey, in Book B, p.193 for James West - 200 acres on Wolsey's Creek, 31 Aug 1799.

In 1800, James West has the following
200 acres on "Herriken Cr" [probably Hurricane Creek] in Livingston Co that was entered and surveyed for John Holcomb
200 acres on Drakes Cr, Warren Co, also entered and surveyed for John Holcomb
another 100 acres, Drakes Cr, Warren Co and the 100 acres on the Red River
In subsequent years, he seemed to have disposed of the 100 acres tract in Warren Co, but continues to pay taxes on the other three.

Additional surveys for James included 50 acres, north Fork of Red River, 30 May 1804, Book C, p. 90; 400 acres on the Red River, 1 Mar 1810, Book D, p.94, and another 100 acres on the North fork of the Red river, 19 Oct 1829, Book F, p.41.

Kentucky Land Grants, Jillson, lists the following for James West
100 acres, surveyed 2 Aug 1796, N Fork Red River, Logan Co; Book 1, p.486
50 acres, surveyed 30 May 1804, N Fork Red River, Logan Co; Book 9, p.400
100 acres, surveyed 10 Jul 1804, N Fork Red River, Logan Co; Book 9, p.401
400 acres, surveyed 1 Mar 1810, Red River, Logan Co; Book 11; p.194
11 Acres, surveyed 24 Feb 1818, Red River, Logan Co, Book D, p.120
100 acres, surveyed 19 Oct 1826, N Fork Red River, Logan Co; Book 27, p.350

James West Junr: 2m under 10, 1m 26-45; 1f -10, 1f 16-26

James West with 2m under 10, 1m 26-45; 1f 16-26 - suspiciously similar to James West Junr.... he does seem to be in a very different location as he's near Edward Collins, the McCutcheons, Duvall
[since they are both the same age, I suspect they were cousins, not father and son]
There were two marriages for James Wests just prior to this census and both have too many children - were these 2nd marriages for both?
James West married Mouning Howard, 30 Sep 1807
James West married Susan Morgan, Feb 9 1808 - probably the James that died in 1810, leaving a widow Susanna, but apparently no children.
