Benjamin Newman

( - Aft Oct 1818)

I thought that Eliza Ann Newman who married William Morton Haden was likely a sister to Josiah. An obituary for Eliza stated that her only living sibling was Dr. Samuel T. Newman of St. Louis. The following will mentions no Eliza, although there is a "Betsy" and it certainly has no Samuel. It would appear that whatever kinship was between Josiah and Eliza Ann Newman, was not that of brother and sister.

Abstract of a will from Jefferson Co MS, Book A - Benjamin Newman, dated 2 Oct 1818. He named his wife Olive, eldest son as Isaac. Other sons were Reuben B., Uriah, and Josiah. Daughters were Maria Irwin, and Frances and Betsey Newman. "Betsey" could of course be a nickname for Eliza, but there was no Samuel T. in these children and the following article indicates Eliza had a brother Samuel.

There is another will in Jefferson Co, Book A, p.86, of Simeon Newman. It is dated 16 Dec 1825 and names wife Sally R., sons Joseph H., Benjamin, Claudius and Simeon and daughters Eliza Martha and Margaret.
