The biographer, The Ancestry of Abraham Lincoln, gave a first wife, Mary Shipley, dau of Robert & Sarah Shipley of Lunenburg Co who died in Virginia prior to 1779. He was sure that Bathsheba, was the daughter of Leonard Herring. The problem is that this author had not discovered the marriage of Abraham and Bathsheba which took place in 1770. It is quite likely that Bathsheba was the ONLY wife of Abraham and the mother of all his children; the marriage to a Mary apparently can be attributed to false memory. The Shipleys were later among the associated families in Illinois, but I find no suggestion that they were near Abraham in Augusta Co VA.
18 Feb 1781, Abraham Lincoln and "Bershaba" his wife deeded 250 acres of land to Michael Shanks. Recorded 17 Jun 1781. On 8 Sep 1781, a commission was assigned to obtain her dower relinquishment which was executed on the 24th of September.
The author doubted that Bathsheba survived Abraham by many years, and even that she had gone to Kentucky. However, Bathsheba Lincoln was living in Washington Co KY in 1792 and was taxed on Oct 16, along with her son Mordecai, indicating he was over age 21. Bathsheba had a male between the ages of 16 and 21 which must have been Josiah. In 1795, Thomas & Josiah were taxed separately and Bathsheba no longer there. So not only did she survive Abraham, she moved to Kentucky with his children.
Just my thoughts. Abraham was about age 30 when he married Bathsheba. There is no question she was mother of Thomas, father of President Lincoln, who was born in 1778. Births of the older sons are not well documented. Mordecai, believed to be the eldest, was on a tax list in 1792, so he was born by 1771. That does make it possible for him to be a son of Bathsheba. However, he could have been older and been the offspring of an earlier wife. [The Herring family tradition is that Mordecai was a son of Bathsheba].
Thomas was the 4th of five children born to Abraham and Bathsheba. The older siblings were Mordecai, Josiah & Mary - Nancy was his younger sister.
The family moved from Rockingham Co VA to Jefferson Co, KY in the early 1780's. Abraham left his wife with five young children, in a wilderness
