Individual Details

Charles Miller Shelley

(25 Dec 1833 - 20 Jan 1907)

Charles married Kathleen McConnell, 15 Jun 1865. They had five children - the first and last died in infancy. Kathleen died at the birth of the last child, a daughter, Kathleen 2d, and Charles married his sister-in-law, Olivia McConnell.

Charles was a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army and since the War served in the Alabama Congress several terms. In 1887, he was Fourth Auditor of the United States Treasury, living in Washington, DC.

At the beginning of the Civil War, Charles volunteered for the Alabama Talladega Artillery, organized as the 5th AL Infantry. He was elected Captain and saw action at Manassas. In March of 1862, he was commissioned a Colonel and commanded the 30th AL in Kentucky, Port Gibson, and was in the surrender at Vicksburg. After the prisoner exchange, he served at Chattanooga, and in Atlanta campaign. He was promoted to Brigadier General in Sep of 1864; he led his troops against the Federals at Franklin TN and was captured again at Nashville. Exchanged again, he saw service with the Army of the Tennessee in the Carolina campaign which ended with Gen. Johnston's surrender 26 Apr 1865.

Charles is buried Oak Hill Cemetery, Talledega. His first wife, Kathleen McConnell Shelley is also there - born 20 Nov 1838, died 13 Jan 1877. Her sister and the second is also there, I think, as Ann Olivia Shelley, born 14 Dec 1843, died 10 Mar 1903.
