Nathan George Shelley

Nathan married his cousin, Sarah F. Shelley, daughter of Jacob D. Shelley, 24 Nov 1854. In 1887 when the family letter was written, he was practicing law in Austin. He had been a member of the Alabama legislature in 1853; moved to Texas in 1854. Nathan served in the state Senate of Texas and as Attorney General. In 1846, Nathan was in Co E of the 1st AL Infantry, Mexican War. His uncle, and father-in-law, Capt. Jacob Shelley was his commanding officer. He was admitted to the Alabama bar in Mar of 1849. He was elected to the Texas state Senate in 1861; and was elected Attorney General, 3 Feb 1862.

Nathan did serve briefly in the civil War, in the Army of the Tennessee under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, the campaign from Dalton to Atlanta, GA. He signed the oath of amnesty, 1 Nov 1865 and returned to the practice of law in Austin. He was commissioned a Brigadier General of state troops, after his return.

Nathan is buried Oakwood Cemetery, Austin. His widow outlived him, dying in 1910. There were seven children, six living to adulthood. All have markers at Oakwood.
