Mary Jane's death record states she died 9 Mar 1926 in Birmingham and was buried the next day in Clanton. She was age 76. Parents were Henry Maddox, b. Georgia, and Ellen, born in Alabama. She was married- spouse not named. I suspect this was transcribed wrong and she died in 1916, since Henry was already widowed in 1920 - or they were living apart in 1920.

Buried Pleasant Grove Methodist Cemetery, Fairview, Chilton Co, AL

Henry served in the Civil War prior to his marriage. He enlisted in Russell County AL as a private in Company H, 28th Georgia Artillery. The 1921 Census of Confederate Soldiers states he served in Co H of the 9th Florida Regt - perhaps an error. His address was 600 Hunter St, Birmingham in 1921.

28th Battalion, Georgia Siege Artillery
28th Artillery Battalion was organized at Savannah, Georgia, during the summer of 1863 with nine companies, later reduced to seven. All of its companies had seen prior heavy artillery service. It was assigned to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and took an active part in the fight at Olustee. In the spring of 1864 the unit was sent north as infantry. Companies F and H were assigned to Finegan's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia, and five companies to Elliot's, then J.C. Fiser's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. Companies F and H were involved in the Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign and surrendered with no officers and 7 men. The other five companies served at Savannah and in the North Carolina Campaign. They surrendered on April 26, 1865. Major A. Bonaud was in command.
Henry was at Appomatox, Virginia when Lee surrendered. Family lore says that he was "close enough to touch the General's white horse". He and a brother , either Bill or John, served together and walked home from Virginia to Phenix City, Alabama after the war was over.

The Alabama Archives apparently has a pension record, #14233, for Henry. He enlisted 1 Jan 1864 and was discharged 11 Apr 1865. He served as a Private. Pension application was witnessed by M. R. Seaborn and S. E. Wilkins.

Henry's death record shows he died 26 Jun 1928 in Clanton and was buried the next day at Pleasant Grove. He was 87 and living in Birmingham. Said to have been born Lee Co, AL.
