Edith Wilkinson

(Ca 1734 - 1826)

I have found two lineages for Edith. Both based on proximity and some assuming.

Hi EArl,
John Wilkinson (m. Frances Elam) was the son of John Wilkinson and Sarah
Royall. The first John Wilkinson died 1 Sep 1684 in Charles City coVA. His
will was probated WP 3 Dec 1688 Charles City Co. Sarah Royall Wilkinson died
before 4 Feb 1688/9, also in Charles City Co VA.

John II was born abt 1674, and chose William Randolph chose Capt. William
Randolph as his guardian 5 Jan 1690/01, being 14 years old. I have seen this
John also named as Anthony, although I believe they are not one in the same
person. John married Frances Elam some time about 1698 in Henrico Co VA,
although I haven't not found a bond. IF anyone has access to Henrico marriage
records and there is John and Frances Elam Wilkinson, I'd be grateful for
that info. She married after the death of her father, as she's still listed
as Frances Elam in her father's will.
Children of Frances Elam and John Wilkinson (that are known to me) were;
John, Anthony, Joseph, Martin and William. It seems more than likely there
were daughters, but if so, I've not found them. Martin Wilkinson is
apparently in Amelia Co by 1761 as I find him ; Amelia Co WB 2x Dr. James

John Wilkinson III b. 1700-1710 in Henrico Co VA, m. Jane _____ (I've not
been able to find the maiden name of Jane. There have been a number proposed,
and none have come out yet). He died aft 18 Dec 1773/bef July 1779 Amelia Co

Jane didn't take this will lying down.
"On July 20, 1779, Jane Wilkinson of Amelia County renounces & disclaims
her right to any provision or legacy in the will of her late husband, John
WILKERSON, dec'd., dated Dec 18, 1773 & declares herself dissatisfied with
it, & claims instead the dower & distributive share appointed her by law.

I think I can prove, with wills and deeds, the line from John Wilkinson and
Sarah Royall down through me. I don't have the marriage dates or clear death
dates for some individual's.
I think there is a book titled "Wilkinson Family of Southside Virginia",
Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck, or an article in a VA Genealogist that I need to
find, but have been unable to do so. I think that book has some valuable
information in it, but I've been unsuccessful in finding it on interlibrary
loan.
I can send you want I have in a family report if you want it. I won't
guarantee it's 100% accurate except in my individual line.

Then there is another version - image of two book pages posted on a family tree at Ancestry. The book title not provided - chapter, "The Wilkinson Family and Their Descendants". I did find the book, digitized on Ancestry - The Wilkinson Family History: of Virginia, Missouri and Oklahoma, by Samuel Frederick Wilkson, 1950. The author appears to have been a descendant of Stephen Wilkinson named in the will of John Wilkinson, who wrote his will in Amelia Co, 18 Dec 1773.
The chapter makes assumptions about several generations without definite proof, based apparently on proximity - and not always close proximity. There are several conclusions drawn which seem extremely doubtful to me.

In this article a Thomas Wilkinson, whose wife was Elizabeth, is said to have records in New Kent, St. Peter's Parish and then later in Brunswick, Bristol Parish. There is a deed in Brunswick when Thomas Wilkinson purchased 240 acres in 1732, land said to later be included in Amelia Co. Bristol Parish Register: "John, son of Thomas & Elizabeth Wilkinson, born 25th November last; baptised April 10, 1724. Thomas Wilkinson was appointed Minister for Bistol Parish, 1753, and he served until 1762. He was then the second minister at Nottoway Parish, 1773-1776. The article then claims that his wife Elizabeth died first, her estate appraised in 1760 - since no wife would have an estate with her husband living, I much suspect we have two Thomas Wilkinsons involved. One Thomas left a will, Amelia Co, 19 Mar 1782, and named his wife, unnamed, as beneficiary - although possible, it seems unlikely he could be the Thomas who had a son John born in 1724, as he would have been at least in his eighties. No other children traced. The article then makes the assumption that the John baptised in 1724 is the same as this John who died in Amelia Co in approximately 1774. It is true that Thomas could have married more than once and since the following will of a John Wilkinson precedes this one, he might have had no surviving children. However, John certainly had several children alive in 1782.

John Wilkinson, Sr of Amelia wrote his will, found in Amelia Co Will Book 2, p.345. He named two sons, Benjamin & Stephen, and daughters who each received 10 shillings - Sarah Blankenship, Edith Blankenship, Priscilla Folkes, Keziah Womack, and Milly/Nelly Wilkinson who also received the traditional bed & furniture, cow & calf - so she had not yet married. Jane, wife, and son Benjamin were to be executors. Dated 18 Dec 1773. Jane renounced the will, choosing her dower right instead - 17 Oct 1780, her down was finally laid off - she received land, the negro man George, and sons Benjamin & Stephen each to pay her 800#'s tobacco in her lifetime. Jane's maiden surname never discovered. There is said to be proof John furnished aid during the Rev War - but was that John the same?

There is another problem with assuming the John Wilkinson born 1724 is the same man of the will of 1773 - based on ages of Edith's children, there don't seem to be quite enough years and John, father of Edith, would have been some older.
