Johnathan Gragg McKee
(1826 - 21 Aug 1898)
1860 Census. Shelby Co, AL, Hh 1004
John McKea [indexed as McRea], age 35, b. SC
Lucy, 20, b. AL
James 8 and Priscilla age 5.
Wm McKea, age 45 and born in SC lived next door
John appears to have had an earlier marriage since the children are older. There is a marriage for Jonathan G. McKee in Shelby Co - 25 Apr 1852 - to Jane Swiney.
John served in the 31st AL Infantry in the Civil War. He was paroled at Selma, 20 May 1865 and had enlisted 22 Mar 1862, Mims Crossroads. He served from Chilton Co in Company C, 31st Regt. His widow Lucy applied for pension, 16 May 1907. She stated he died 21 Aug 1898 and was not on the pension rolls. She had 120 acres of land of which 40 acres were badly improved - worth $240. She owned $22 value of personal property in furniture and cattle.
1870 Census. Precinct 4, Baker Co, AL, P.O. Chestnut Creek, Hh 313
John McKee, 40, Farmer, family all born in Alabama
Lucy, 29
James 16. Priscilla 14. Sarah 9. George 6. John 4. Napoleon M. age 1
Charles age 14 [possibly a nephew - no different surname but listed after the others and there was already a daughter age 14]
Note: If all the children are Lucy's, she was a very young bride. I suspect the two oldest may have had a different mother. The house next door was that of George Morgan, age 36 - possibly Lucy's brother? He had an Elizabeth, age 55, b. Georgia, living with him, as well as Zelina A. 25, and Columbus 16, who appear to be siblings. George's wife was Rebecca, age 22 and they had a daughter Martha, age 3.
In 1880, Lucy stated her father was born in North Carolina and her mother born in Georgia.
