He was a sharpshooter in the 58th Alabama Infantry. He was in Cox's (wildcats) 2nd Battalion Georgia sharpshooters. After the battle of Chickamauga their ranks were so decimated the 58th consolidated with the 32nd Alabama.

On May 16, 1865, J. J. Traywick signed that he would not bear arms against the United States of America, or give any information, or do any military duty whatsoever, until regularly exchanged as a prisoner of war. He signed with his mark. Description was 5 ft 8 in, brown hair, dark eyes, fair complexion.
