Zachariah Rush Murrell

Zachariah R. Murrell served in Co. G, 41st Tenn. Infantry during the civil war. He was 18 when he enlisted, Nov 20, 1861 for 12 months and at that time he was the 4th Corp in Capt. C. H. Bean's Company of Tennessee Volunteers. This was at Camp Trousdale, enrolled by Lt. T. W. Hunt
This Company would become Co. G. of the 41st Regt. It was surrended at Ft. Donelson, TN, 10 Feb 1862, released at Vicksbury in September. They were reorganized and exchanged at Aiken's Landing VA, 10 Nov 1862. Those not captured served in other commands. It was eventually consolidated with the 19th & 24th Regts, in January of 1865; then on 9 Apr 1865, with the 3rd Consolidated. They were paroled at Greensboro, NC 1 May 1865.
One Muster Roll card says that Z. R. Murrell served as 4th Corpl. until 29 Sep 1862 - he is subsequently listed as a Private. He was captured at Fort Donelson, 16 Feb 1862 and listed on a Roll of Prisoners of War at Camp Morton, Indiana in June of 1862. He was sent from Camp Morton to Vicksburg, Miss to be exchanged, 28 Aug 1862. He was detailed as Provost Guard, 1 Aug 1863.
Zachariah was captured a second time, serving with forces under Maj. Gen. Thomas, Dept. of the Cumberland, near Nashville, 16 Dec 1864. He is noted as having arrived at Military Prison, Louisville, KY during the five days ending 25 Dec 1864. He had arrived and been discharged from Louisville on 21 Dec and sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois; where he was received on 24 Dec. He then appeared on a roll of Prisoners of War paroled at Camp Douglas and transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, for exchange on 23 Mar 1865, where he was released, 4 Jun 1865 upon taking Oath of Allegiance to the United States, and by order of The President.
