William E. Murrell

(1833 - Bef 1870)

1860 Census. P.O. Winchester, Franklin Co TN, Hh 348
William Murrell, age 26, b. TN
Sarah Hurley [looks like Hurtz or Hurty], age 32, b. TN
Mary E. Hurley, age 10
William Murrell had 4 slaves in 1860, Franklin co TN. It appeared to be a family with a female, age 24, a male 19, two young boys, ages 4 and 2; all listed as mulatto.
Sarah Hurley also shown with three slaves - a female age 26, a young girl age 6 and a two-year-old boy.

I believe there is little doubt that the William E. Murrell who served in Co. G of the 41 Regt of Tennessee Infantry, the same unit that his younger brother Zachariah was in, is the same man. He appears to have survived the War as he returned home to marry in 1866. However, by 1870, his wife and two-year-old daughter were living with her widowed mother.

W. E. Murrell was mustered into service 26 Nov 1861, by Lt. T. W. Hunt at Camp Trousdale, as 1st Lt in Capt C. H. Bean's Company of Tennessee Volunteers. [William signed 6 days after his younger brother. He was age 28. This Company later became Co. G. of the 41st Regt. It was surrended at Ft. Donelson, TN, 10 Feb 1862, released at Vicksbury in September. They were reorganized and exchanged at Aiken's Landing VA, 10 Nov 1862. Those not captured served in other commands. It was eventually consolidated with the 19th & 24th Regts, in January of 1865; then on 9 Apr 1865, with the 3rd Consolidated. They were paroled at Greensboro, NC 1 May 1865.
He was on a roll of Prisoners of War at the Depot for Prisoners of War near Sandusky, Ohio - Johnson's Island. He had been captured at Fort Donelson on 16 Feb 1862; arrived in Ohio, 16 May; and on 1 Sept 1862, he had been sent to Vicksburg
William E. Murrell was promoted to Captain, 15 Dec 1862.
It was noted that Jan & Feb of 1864, he was away from his company on Detached service by order of Gen. J. E. Johnston. In July and Aug of 1864, he was noted on furlough from the Hospital. Another states that he had a leave of absence, 60 days, on surgeon's certificate. Then I found the card that stated William E. Murrell was wounded in the field, near Atlanta, GA, on 19 Aug 1864.
Capt. W. E. Murrell appears on a Register of the Way Hospital, Meridian, Miss, with the complain of "wounded". Admitted Mar 23 & 24, 1865. Furloughed.
Roll dated Talladega, AL, 20 Jun 1865, states that he appeared on a roll of Prisoners of War paroled by Brevt. Brig Genl. M. H. Chrysler, commanding the U.S. Forces at Talledega as being Paroled on 17 May 1865.
The remainder of his military file consists of pay vouchers, requisitions for clothing items, etc. It would seem that William was wounded at least twice, and captured twice. One wonders if his apparent early death was brought on by his war experiences.
