It would seem that William was a deputy sheriff, and sheriff, during the Civil War. There is a file in the Confederate Papers Relating to Citizens or Business Firms, 1861-65, NARA M346. Known as the "Citizens File," digital images on Fold3.com that consists of a number of payments to Wm. H. Haden, deputy sheriff, for the arrest of several deserters from the Confederate Army. He was paid $30 for each arrest.
One of the deserters was Jesse Robinson of Co. A, 44th VA Regt. Another was Wm. O. Davis, Co. K, 44th VA Regt.
One card in the file has Wm. H. Haden, Exempt State Officer, Sheriff, Fluvanna Co., Va.

He appears to living next door to a Haden couple I cannot identify:
....John S. [the name and relationship is written over - the relationship looks more like "Kid" or "Bid" than anything else] This John was born Dec 1868 and is 31 years old, a merchant - that could be the age of the youngest son, called Benjamin in previous censuses. John's wife's name seems to be spelled "Lysle" and she was born Aug 1876, age 23. They had been married for two years.

Wm Henry Haden of Crozet, Albemarle Co, White Hall District died 20 Oct 1919 of chronic nephritis. He was married to Elizabeth G. Haden. Born 18 Jul 1835 in Palmyra, Fluvana County, and was a merchant. Father, James Haden; monther, Ann Massie - both born in Virginia. Buried Oct 22nd, at Palmyra. The informant was C. A. Haden (son).

W. H. Haden, aged 84, is dead at the home of his son, Curtis A. Haden, at Crozet, this county, from ailments incident to old age. He was a son of Col. B. J. Haden of Fluvanna County, and was three times married - first to Miss Sue M. Brown of Albemarle county, on Dec 11, 1855. His second marriage was in 1902, to Miss E. A. Forrest, of Richmond, and on September 11, 1919, he was married to Miss Lizzie Gilman, of Richmond, who survives. He leaves the following children: The Rev. Thomas H. Haden of Kobe, Japan; Curtis A. Haden, of Crozet; Mrs. R. S. Campbell, of Wilmington, and A. B. Haden and Mrs. L. O. Haden of Palmyra, VA.
