Frances Watlington

(1807 - )

Notes from researcher Helen Sharpe:

Frances was on the 1860 census with Jno Scott. They were not married
1860 Caswell Co. Census - Yancyville #973/982
Scott, Jno 68 mechanic
F. Watlington 50, female
N. Scott, 30 female; N. Scott, 22 female; J. Scott, 28 male; M. Scott, 23 female

John Scott was married to Mary Watlington daughter of Frances [FRANCIS ???] Watlington and Lydia Harper. Father of this Frances Watlington not known at this time.
[obviously this is an error, see note about the marriage dates, later]

My note: I did find the above census reference and of course there's no indication on this census of married status. It is possible the lady stated her maiden name. Mary, daughter of Francis, could also have been named Mary Frances, for her father. In 1860, John was found only a few households from Reid Watlington. It should also be noted that one or more of the younger females in the household, could have been either the much younger wife of old John, or the wife of his son John. There is in fact in Caswell Co, a marriage of John W. Scott to Mary A. Watlington, 21 Jul 1849 - probably the son.

Regarding the marriage of Francis Watlington to Lydia Harper - it took place on 4 Nov 1823. John Scott married Mary Watlington, 17 Dec 1823 - there's no way Mary could have been their daughter. Notice that two John Scotts seem to have married ladies named Mary Watlington in different generations. I believe this is the principal source of the confusion.

Here is the 1850 Census for John Scott. Listed next to the households of Reid and his mother Nancy Watlington:
Hh 381
Reid Watlington, 45, farmer. Catherine Watlington, 51.
Nancy Singleton, age 30
Lina P. Watlington, age 20.
Watlington, now dittoed: Hiram 17, Pilina A. 14, Mary P. 12, Caroline V. 11.
Hh 382 [ditto continued for surname]
Nancy, age 75, b. VA [all previous had been born "Same" presumably Caswell from previous page]
Dinitia, age 50, b. VA
Nancy, 47, b. Caswell, NC
Francis, 43, female, b. Caswell, NC
Dinitia Scott, age 23, b. Caswell, NC [all of the ladies could not read nor write]
Hh 383
John [ditto continue for Scott], age 56, carpenter
Mary J., age 21
John J., age 19
Nancy E., age 17 [all born Caswell]

Given the proximity of John Scott to this family, I cannot help but believe he married into the family. If he did indeed marry a Mary Watlington, and her father named Francis, there is some other connection. I think it much more likely Mary Watlington's father was Edward Watlington, because Edward's brother Armistead had a daughter named Mary B. who was about the same age.. There was a Francis Watlington & family living in Caswell in 1830 - probably Francis & Lydia Harper. I suspect Francis was a son of either Edward or Armistead.
