James was the only son of Noel & Lucy Burton whose birth is not recorded in The Douglas Register. However, he received his child's share of his father estate in 1777.

Revolutionary Service
1781. In the Fall of 1781, Lt. James Burton commanded a company with Capt. Spilsbe Coleman at the skirmish of Brown Marsh. Holloway Pass also fought in this battle. The service is recorded in the pension application of Thomas Miles in Gerogia. Capt James Burton, brother of Capt Robert Burton, was also mentioned in the pension application of Dudley Gatewood as being the only living person who would remembers this service. Capt James Burton was mentioned in the 1832 pension application of Arthur Toney; Burton served as a reference although he stated he "knew nothing of Toney's service".


April, 1794. Burton was deputy sheriff in Caswell Co.

James Burton was Caswell Co's Representative in the NC General Assembly 1806-1808.
