Davis Stockton

(Abt 1686 - Abt 1769)

The Stocktons are said to have come to Virginia along with Miachel Woods, some of the earliest settlers.

Ivy Creek, 29 Mar 1747. The inhabitants of Ivy Creek and the Mountain Plain Congregation joined with the Congregation of Rockfish to call the Rev. Samuel Black to administer to them, according to the rules & practice of the Orthodox Reformed Presbyterian Church. Among the names that signed are Davis and Richard Stockton.

The wife cited for Davis is Sarah Goudylock, said to be a daughter of William Godylouch and Ann Duncan. I have found no proof. Hannah, daughter of Davis married Adam Godylouch, and that may be the source of the kinship.
Another source, see later, gives his wife's name as Martha.

Children thought to be the following. I'm sure their birth years are quesstimates.
Richard, b. 1710, married Agnes Anthony, d. 1775, Albemarle Co VA
Martha, b. 1712, married Francis Whetchel, d. 1816, Cherokee Co, SC
Thomas, b. 1714, married Rachel Allen, died 1783, Albemarle Co VA, sources disagree on her parents
Elizabeth, b. 1715, married William Whiteside, d. 1791, Rutherford Co NC. His will recorded Tryon Co NC 1777
Hannah, b. 1716, married Adam Godylouch, d. in South Carolina bef 1783
William, b. 1718, married Jean Marshall, died in Washington Co TN, 1782
Samuel, b. 1720, married Prudence Tolbert, died 1807, Rutherford Co NC

Some researchers state the father of Davis was also a Richard. However descendants DNA tests indicate these were separate lines. A Robert Stockton's descendants have DNA similar to that of descendants of Davis Stockton. Apparently Robert & Davis settled in Lancaster Co PA about the same time. They were Presbyterian and married into Scotch-Irish families, so may have been brothers.

12 Mar 1739, Davis Stockton received a grant of 400 acres adjacent land of Adam Godylouch. Said to have been on Ivy Creek. [I read this patent and nowhere does it say it was adjacent to Adam - it was in Goochland in 1739, both sides of Ivy Creek a branch of Rivanna River, and was adjacent Capt. Charles Hudson.

He patented another 800 acres in 1741, in two patents, both sides of Mechum's River, still in Goochland [this area later became Albemarle] The north fork of Mechum's became known as Stocktons Branch, Creek, or Stocktons Mill Creek.

A Sarah Stockton received a patent on 10 Mar 1756, 297 acres, both sides of the Virgin Spring Branch of the Mechum River, now Albemarle Co. There is nothing in this patent to indicate she received it as a widow, or inherited it - it is doubtful she would be receiving a patent as a wife unless it had descended from a male relative.

His estate said to be inventoried 2 Jan 1762, which would indicate an earlier death than shown here.

In the History of Albemarle County Davis is said to have died circa 1760, leaving a widow Martha who married Samuel Arnold, who lived on Ivy Creek.
