I believe William's grandfather became his guardian. He was not of full age in 1840.

Petition of Evan Davis & wife Elizabeth, of Mary Hayden, Ruth Haden, Elizabeth Hayden & James Hayden who petition by their guardian & next friend Evan Davis and William Hayden who petitions by his guardian and next friend Billy D. Haden.
Douglas B. [sic] Hadin departed this life intestate and was possessed among other articles, two negroes and a negro man by the name of Jacob and a woman by the name of Jenny who since the death of Haden has had a child called Louisa. Your petitioner Elizabeth, who has since intermarried with Evan Davis, was left a widow of the said Douglas and that he left your petitioners Mary, Ruth, Elizabeth, & James, children by the said Elizabeth heirs surviving and your petitioner William, his only child by a former marriage. They are entitled to share equally among them, but not possible by the the numbers of your petitioners; sale for partition. Signed: Ralph Gonell, Atty

Sell slaves, property of D. P. Haden decd. Advertised thirty days previous to sale and on 13 Jun last, proceeded to sell at the house of Hezekiah Lomase, Jacob, Janny & her child Louisa for $1431. Purchased by Evan A. Davis, payable in six months and taken security. Billy D. Haden claimed one fifth for Wm W. Haden, the son of D. P. Haden by his first wife. $286.20 taken. Douglas Haden 1843 Douglas died circa 1836.
Only the following paper was in the file, indicating that Billy D. Haden was no longer guardian of his grandson. Had Billy D. died? His wife Caroline remarried in 1848.

1850 Census. Davie Co NC. I found Henry R. Austin, age 41, his wife Elvira and assorted children. Living with them was William B. March, sheriff, and two young daughters, William W. Haden was not there.
