Individual Details
George Payne
(21 Nov 1707 - Bef 15 Mar 1784)
George married Judith Burton ca 1726. George died bef 15 Mar 1784, Goochland Co VA.
George patented two tracts of land as George Payne Jr. while his father was still living.
20 Nov 1734 Goochland Co. 190 acres, north side James River, west side of Treasurers Run, PB 15, p.385
21 Nov 1734 Goochland Co 400 acres on branches of Treasurers Run on north side of James River. PB 15, p.388
After his father's death, he added to his holdings - patents issued as George Payne.
Two on 10 Feb 1748 Goochland Co.
400 acres both sides middle branch of Cunningham Creek PB 27, p.136
400 acres both sides north branch of Crooks Creek, PB 27, p.138
Albemarle Co was formed out of Goochland in 1744 and it appears that at least on these fell within the boundaries of Albemarle. Cunningham Creek is today in Fluvanna Co, but would have been part of Albemarle at the time of the patent. Fluvanna formed out of Albemarle in 1777. I have not located Crooks Creek on a present day map, but the large patent of the three brothers in Albemarle Co in 1759, was also on Crooks Creek.
12 Mary 1759 Patent to George Payne in Albemarle Co. 395 acres both sides of the south fork and joining to the south side of Great Cary Creek. PB 34, p.316
On 20 Sep 1759, the three brothers, Josias, George & John Payne were issued a patent in Albemarle Co of 3443 acres, both sides of Crooks Creek. PB 33, p.650 [I have been unable to locate this creek on present day maps. Another patent did mention Crook Crk, in fork of James River.]
The description of this patent is lengthy but it does state that 400 acres were formerly granted to George Payne, 10 Feb 1748; 3043 acres were residue never granted. Neighbors included Wm Bailey, Thomas Ambrose, Thomas Jefferson, John King, William News, Benjamin & Richard Cocke, Walter King, Julius Saunders, William Sanders, William Clements, Abraham ?Says. It bounded twice on lines of George Payne.
