John Morton

( - 1722)

Richmond Co was formed of old Rappahannock Co.
Sittenburne Parish was in Old Rappahannock Co 1664-1692; Essex 1692-1704; Richmond 1769-1732, and in King George Co 1720-1732.

4 Sep 1694 Richmond Co Deed Book B. James Orchard of Westmoreland Co & Rebecca his wife to John Morton of Northumberland Co - 157 acres in Richmond Co. Rec. 7 Sep 1694.

2 Oct 1713 John Morton of Richmond Co qualified as Lieutenant of Militia.
Was this the father or son - likely the son as he is later referred to as "Capt".

John Morton from Richmond Co VA:
His will names sons Richard, James, Thomas, wife Deborah, Mary and Winifred Morton whose relationship is not stated, and sons William and John. Wife Deborah was executrix.
His estate inventoried and appraised.

It is not known if Deborah was his only wife. This cannot be the same John Morton who lived in Henrico Co and was married to Joanne Hughes, although the two men may have been about the same age and died near the same time. Both men had sons named John and Thomas. Databases are found online which combine the histories of these men into one person, or confuse their wives and children.

Morton Family
Generation 1
SIR WILLIAM MORTON
Born: 1610 England
Married: Unknown

In early colonial times and long before the creation of the District of Columbia in 1790, the Morton's owned large tracts of land upon which the city of Washington now stands. The District of Columbia was cut off in 1790 from two Maryland counties, Prince George and Montgomery, and part of Virginia. King Charles II granted a large tract of land in the Northern Neck of Virginia to some of his followers, among them Sir William Morton. Sir William sent to America a son who represented his fathers interests and became the founder of one line of the Morton families in America. (See Calendar State Papers, Charles II, Colonial Series, Lenox Library, NYC.)
