Capt. John Morton

( - Bef Nov 1728)

John Morton's father said to be of Northumberland Co VA and was also a John Morton. If this statement is true, then these Mortons are likely not related to either the John Morton of Henrico whose sons were John, Thomas & Joseph, nor to John Morton of Richmond Co who died 1722, leaving a will that named his sons as Richard, James, Thomas, William & John. All three of these Johns have been intermingled on the Internet - perhaps the counties of King George and Prince George in Virginia have also been confused. Given that John, married Mary Mountjoy, in Richmond Co - it seems most likely that he would be the son named in the will of 1722 in that county. There was also a relationship with the Beckwith family in Richmond Co which again seems to suggest John belongs in the family of the John whose will was written in 1722.

The records could possibly be either father or son, most likely the first is the father, the second could be this John.

After the death of Mountjoy, Mary Lane married (2) Elias Wilson and (3) Joseph Bellfield. Her children by Mountjoy were Thomas, Mary [who married John Morton] and Alvin [John Morton became his guardian; later on Alvin Mountjoy would become the guardian of Joseph Morton, son of his sister Mary & John Morton]

Note: Joseph Morton, believed to be a son of this John Morton later named one of his daughters Betty McCarty Morton. Another executor was Mr. Lawrence Butler - Joseph named another daughter Lucy Butler Morton. However, Joseph, Son of John was likely only about 9 years old in 1724 - this is obvioulsy not him and the elder John, whose will was proved in 1722, had no son named Joseph.

Belfield to divide the negroes belonging to the deceased's estate between the said John Morton and Wm Jordan in right of his wife
Note: the wording is ambiguous - should the negroes have been divided between Joseph Morton as son and heir and his mother now the wife of William Jordan - or are they being divided between the remaining estate of John Morton and his wife now the wife of William Jordan....
