George Lane

(1805 - Aft 1870)

George added to this family by Lois Long Carey. She also states there may have been a sister Elizabeth. This could have been the Elizabeth married to John R. Pace in Fluvanna Co.

He is said to have married Eliza W. Flanagan in Louisa Co.

1850 Census. Fluvanna Co.
George Layne, age 45, Farmer, b. VA
Eliza W., age 49
Frances A. M. age 22
George J., age 18, Carpenter
Sarah E., age 16
William H. age 14
[They lived next door to Peggy Haden who was George's maiden aunt.]

In 1840, George was in Fluvanna Co:
George Lane: 1m under 5, 1m 5-10, 1m 30-40 1f 5-10, 1f 10-15, 1f 20-30
They were counted only a few families from Peggy Haden - obviously the same man

In 1830, there was not a George Lane in Fluvanna Co. However, there was a George Lane living in Madison Co, AL - the same county where his Uncle George Haden had died in 1829 and where Uncle George's children were living with their eldest brother. The George Lane in Alabama fits this George fairly well:
George Lane, 1m under 5, 1m age 20-30. 1f under 5, 1f age 20-30.

Family stories are that George and family did move to Alabama in the 1820's but returned to Virginia. This would seem quite likely. I have often wondered how the two young children of George Haden who returned to Virginia and were raised by their maiden aunt Peggy, would have made this trip. Possibly they returned with George Lane's family. George's younger sister Sarah married William George Haden, the son of George Haden who returned to Virginia from Alabama.
