Individual Details
Grace ?Makin
(Abt 1585 - )
Very wrong identification - Grace has been said to first be married to John Sherman by whom she had sons John and Richard [Richard returned to England]. She married (2) Thomas Rogers, (3) William Palmer, and (4) Roger Porter.
Grace Sherman died in Watertown, MA, leaving a will proved 17 Jun 1662. She gave no bequests to the children of William Palmer or Roger Porter, only to her own children. She named son John Rogers, Elizabeth Smith [daughter by Thomas Rogers & widow of Daniel Smith], Daniel Smith, son of her daughter Elizabeth Rogers, and to the children of Capt John Sherman - John, Martha, Mary, Sarah, & Joseph. Any residue to be divided between son John Sherman and daughter Elizabeth Smith. One page of the inventory has a note about "their brother in England", which would be Richard Sherman.
Identification that the Grace married to John Sherman is the same as the daughter of Tobias Makin has been disputed by an article in The American Genealogist, Vol. 61, No. 2, July, 1985, p.79. She was Grace Sherman in her father's will in 1610. The will of Tobais Makin, unmarried brother of Grace, from County Essex, indicates that Grace, daughter of Tobias was still Grace Sherman in 1620/1, and his sister Joan had married Richard Stone. Thomas & Grace Rogers had a child baptized in 1716 during this time.
Then in the January 2014 issue of the NEHGS Register, p.16-33, the last article on a series regarding the Shermans and their related families, "The Earliest Shermans of Dedham, Essex, and Their Wives: Part 6: Edmund Sherman and His Descendants" by Michael Johnson Wood, there is the following proof of Grace Makin as the wife of Edmund Sherman:
"(Edmund Sherman) married about 1598 Grace Makin, born say 1578, daughter of Tobias and Katherine (Westbrome) Makin of Fingringhoe, Essex. Grace survived her husband and was mentioned in the will of Samuel Sherman (half-brother of Edmond), dated 14 June 1643 as 'my loving sister Sherman, Edmond's widow.' Grace was mentioned earlier in the will of her brother Tobias Makin, dated 7 Feb 1620/1.
No further record of Grace has been found. If she remained in New Haven until her death, she must have been buried in New Haven Green, the only burying place for New Haven until 1797. Between 1797 and 1812, a few of those buried there were reintered in the Grove Street Cemetery, but most were left under the green and three churches were eventually built over the graves. Some of the gravestones were moved to the Grove Street location, and some remain under the Center Church on the Green. Most of the old gravestones were destroyed. If she stayed in Fairfield, she could have been buried in the Old Burying Ground there, with her husband.
