Individual Details

Joanna Comstock

(Bet 1780 and 1790 - 14 Apr 1843)

Joanna married before 1810, Kanah Mills, as his second wife. His first wife was Rhoda, surname unknown - she died 8 Oct 1802, buried Westmoreland, Oneida Co NY.

Joanna's birth year as indicated by her burial record as 1765, seems to be wrong. She was probably 15-20 years younger than her husband. I wonder when her grave marker was placed and by whom - did they realize she was Kanah's second wife?]

An Elkanah Mills, age 26-45, was already living in Oneida Co [Augusta] in 1800. And a wife appeared to be with him - his first wife Rhoda did not die until 1802.

Buried Hillcrest Cemetery, near Paris, Oneida Co, NY:
Kanah Mills, d. May 11, 1847, age 82y 3m 11d; a Soldier of the Revolution [b. 1765]
Joanna Mills, his Wife, d. Apr 14, 1843, age 78 [b. 1765 - but I believe it was more like 1785....]
Rhoda Mills, wife of Kanah, d. Oct 8, 1802 in 36th year of her age [b. 1766]
Henry Mills, son of Kanah & Joanna, d. Jan 10, 1821 in 14th year [b. 1807]
George Mills, d. Oct 4 1851, aged 42 years. [born 1809]

Kanah Mills was originally of Connecticut. I believe his name was actually Elkanah Mills as he was enumerated in 1800. If so, he is likely the Elkanah Mills, born 28 Jun 1765, West Simsbury, Hartford County, CT, to Benjamin Mills and his wife Hannah Humphrey. They had married 12 Dec 1757, Simsbury. It is suggested he married Rhoda Case, daughter of Zacheus Case and Abigail Barker of Simsbury. Rhoda is said to have been born ca 1768. The database with this information also gave his date of death as 11 May 1847.

A number of children are suggested for Kanah & Rhoda, as the databases online do not note the second wife, Joanna Comstock. Named are Clima, Abiram, Daniel, Sally, Rhoda, Henry, George M. and Eliza. Henry & George were certainly children of Joanna's as the above cemetery records indicate they were born 1807 and 1809. Abiram testified he was age 51 in 1846, or born, 1795, so he was definitely a child of Rhoda's who died in 1802. One database gives Rhoda as married to Gurdon Dean, Sally as married to an unknown Aldrich, and Eliza as married to Cyrus H. Campbell.

Lewis Terrill, of Bolton in Hartford County, purchased about 40 acres of land in New Hartford on 31 July 1788, for ₤80, from Kanah Mills. The property butted that formerly belonging to Jacob Reed (and “now” under mortgage to Peletiah Allyn) to the west, that belonging to the heirs of Thomas Olcott (deceased) to the north, that of John Walling and that of Martin Roberts to the east, and that of Jacob Reed and that of William Steel to the south. A highway (perhaps the Albany Turnpike?) had been laid out through the property, but this right-of-way was not part of the 40 acres.

28 Dec 1846, Kanah Mills, too infirm to appear in open court, deposed before a Justice of the Peace that he was 81 years of age, a resident of Kirkland, Oneida Co, NY, and had been a Revolutionary soldier. He could find no living person to testify to his service, although he gave the names of a number of officers he served under and fellow soldiers. Kanah enlisted in the Militia at New Hartford, CT on 1 Apr 1780 His Captain was Benjamin Mills, his Col. Busahel Beebe. [Note: online databases suggest that Kanah had a brother Benjamin who died circa 1784] He was discharged 1 Jan 1781, and returned to New Hartford which was his residence both before and after his service. During the winter of 1777 and 78 he had served four weeks as a guard of military stores from Albany to Farmington. Abiram Mills, a clergyman of the Congregational Church and son of Kanah, age 51, deposed for his father on the same day. A letter in the file stated that no record of service and no pay records could be found for Kanah Mills although they did find pay records of Benjamin Mills. [I wonder if they looked for Elkanah Mills - there's nothing at Fold3 under either name.] The Pension was rejected, File R-7246. Kanah died only a few months after making application.

Fold3.com has a service record for Benjamin Mills, Capt, Col. Philip B. Bradley's Regt, 1776, Connecticut. He was in service six months, 20 days. Enlisted June 10, 1776; discharged Jan 1, 1777. He was present at Fort Constitution on 21 Sep 1776. He was at Bergen later that month and in early October. By 12 Oct 1776, they were at Burdetts Ferry. A second record appears for Benja. Mills who enlisted in the same 13 Jun 1776 and was discharged 30 Dec 1776, serving 6 months, 17 days [no rank stated]. A John Mills served in Bradley's Regt as Sergeant - he served from 13 Jun to 16 Nov, 1776.

But it seems the above service was not the only service for Capt Benjamin Mills, and this one does indeed mention Col. Beebe:
It's also interesting that the pension application of Lemuel Messenger [b. 20 July 1759, d. 4 May 1839] , June 1833, states,
"On the first of April 1780 he volunteered under Captain Benjamin Mills of New Hartford in Colonel Beebe's Regiment and Marched from Simsbury in Conn to Horse Neck and was there stationed to Guard the Coast."

I looked for Kanah's children in 1850. I did find Cyrus Campbell.
1850 Census. Kirkland, Oneida Co, NY, Hh 366
Cyrus Campbell, age 46, farmer, b. NY
Eliza, age 40 [so born 1810 and a child of Joanna's]
