Samuel Byrd

(Abt 1758 - 1820)



In 1774, Samuel appeared on a tax roll of Prince Edward Co along with John Byrd, apparently his father. Above 16 was the usual, so Samuel was born by about 1758, if not earlier. Possibly other brothers were older than Samuel - William indicated he was born in 1753 in his Revolutionary pension application but in 1774 he might have been off on his own.

In 1782, Saml Byrd was listed as being in Capt Newell's Militia, Montgomery Co. A Geo. Byrd was also named - relationship not known.
In 1784, Saml. "Bird" appears on a list of Titheables in Capt. Robt. Sayers Company.

1787. Samuel Byrd was on a tax list, Montgomery Co VA, next to his brother William and stepfather, William Burch.

Samuel married Mourning Gilbert. They lived in Grayson Co VA - However Grayson Co was formed from Wythe Co in 1793 and Wythe had been formed from Montgomery Co in 1790.

He is also noted as being one of those living at the head of Nob Fork of Elk Creek, Turkey Fork of Creek, Beaverdam of Elk Creek, or on Elk Creek. He appears on a tax list in Wythe Co in 1793, and on the Grayson Co tax list in 1795.

The 1799 Grayson County, Virginia Land Tax List
William and Samuel Byrd were each taxed for 100 acres.
A George Byrd was also there, and taxed for 100 acres.
[They were also taxed each for 100 acres in 1805 - George Byrd did not appear]

1800 personal property list shows Samuel Byrd with one tithable over 16 and one horse. William Byrd had two tithables over 16 and two horses.

1805 personal property list shows Samuel, now with two thithables over 16 and two horses. William has only one tithable and two horses. A John Byrd was also present with one tithable and three horses.

1808 The party viewed the road from Jacob Stealy's meadow, thence by William Byrd's and from there to the top of the mountain ...same be opened and that Samuel Byrd be appointed surveyor ..hands of Daniel Fielder, William Byrd, Isaac Moore, James Adkins, Timothy Rowark assist in clearing out the same.

1810 Tax List
A Richard Byrd was listed on Greasy Creek - perhaps a son of Samuel or William since their brother was in Kentucky - he had one tithable.
William Byrd was there with two tithables and four horses.
Samuel Byrd had three tithables and three horses.
A John Byrd was there with one tithable.

A deed from Samuel Byrd and wife to William Bird was acknowledgeed in Court by the said Samuel and ordered to be recorded.
Also a deed from William Bird & wife to Samuel Bird was acknowledge in court by the said William and ordered to be recorded.

In 1828, a Samuel Byrd did again appear on the tax lists - a single man with four horses.
