William Byrd

(1753 - 31 May 1829)

William is said to have married Jane Alley about 1784. [I suspect her name was actually Alice and that was not a surname - see 1795 deed below. He is one of Byrds featured in a book The Early Byrds of Grayson Co Virginia.

In the Montgomery Co Court Records is an extensive list of Court Martials - believed to be fined for non-attendance at a General Muster [all of Capt. McDonalds Company was so fined] - and the list includes William "Bird".

1787. William Byrd listed on Tax List, Mongomery Co VA, next to Samuel and his stepfather, William Burch.

19 Oct 1789 William Byrd on Personal Property Tax List, Montgomery Co VA.
He is also noted as being one of those living at the head of Nob Fork of Elk Creek, Turkey Fork of Creek, Beaverdam of Elk Creek, or on Elk Creek. He appears on a tax list in Wythe Co in 1793, and on the Grayson Co tax list in 1795.

Proved by witnesses, 27 Oct 1795.
Note: Jesse Vaughn was a witness - he's the one for whom there is a marriage record to Elizabeth Byrd a few days before she married John Harmon. There must have been a change of heart. Online databases say that Jesse Vaughn married Frances Jones, dau of Thomas & Elizabeth Jones, circa 1788-1789.

William Byrd applied for his Revolutionary pension, S-39266, from Grayson co VA. He was enrolled as 19 Oct 1818 at the rate of $8. He served as a private in the Virginia line in the regiment commanded by Col. Adam Stephens. His application is dated 19 Oct 1818 - William Byrd stated he was 65, a resident of Grayson County. He enlisted as a private with Lt. John Holcombe for two years, in the month of March, 1776; and belonged to Capt. John Morton's Company of the 4th Virginia Regt, commanded by Col. Adam Stevens. He served for one year but because of extreme debility was discharged. He never took part in a general action with the British Army, but was in a skirmish on the James River. He is in reduced circumstances and in need of assistance.
John Fielder testified to the service and stated that when Byrd returned home he was so emaciated, he was not expected to survive.
27 Feb 1821. William Byrd, age 67, a resident of Grayson Co, again appeared in Court and repeated the above. He also testified to his property as: one mare 19 years old, one small horse, two cows & calves, four sheep, clothing and bedding. He was a farmer but due to age and infirmity could not pursue that occupation. His family consisted of himself, his wife's mother age 99 years unable to contribute to her support, and a granddaughter, Matilda Byrd, age about 8. [he didn't mention a wife]
A printed form adds the note that he enlisted in Prince Edward Co, VA
William died 31 May 1829.
