Henry Cox

( - Abt 1809)

When John Richardson, Elizabeth's father, died in 1753, Henry Cox was appointed guardian of the younger children. Elizabeth was probably the eldest child. John Richardson left Elizabeth a tract of land of 320 acres on Lickinghole Creek in Goochland Co, VA. Deeds in Lunenburg Co VA, 1761, indicate that Henry & Elizabeth Cox sold 200 acres of this land to John Cox [possibly of brother of Henry's] and another 100 acres to Thomas Dawson [possibly married to Elizabeth's sister Martha]. Both of these deeds were witnessed by a Joseph Davis who might have been married to Henry's sister.

Some databases report that Elizabeth, deceased by the time of her mother's will, had been married to a Lumpkin - there is mention of a granddaughter Martha Lumpkin in the bequests but her mother's name is not given. It is now suspected that this grandchild Martha was instead the daughter of Mary Curd Richardson's daughter Martha who had an earlier marriage, before she married a Dawson. There is a reference in Lumpkin data referring to a deed of a Richard Lumpkin and wife Martha in Charlotte Co. Martha's mother referred to her as Martha Dawson in her will. The guardianship of the young children, as well as the deeds of sale of the land on Lickinghole Creek, seem adequate proof that Elizabeth Richardson was married to Henry Cox. The unusual given names Richardson and Curd that persist in Cox descendants is also an indication of this marriage.

Henry Cox was in Lunenburg Co, probably the area that became Charlotte Co until about 1779. He's found in the Halifax Co records from about 1779 to 1785. He apparently left Virginia about the same time as his father died. There are land grants in Fayette Co KY indicating his presence there from about 1785 to 1795. After that he apparently moved across the line to Blount Co Tennessee.

Henry married (2) Ann Madison in Charlotte Co - most of his children were by Ann.

Henry Cox is thought to probably be the son of a John Cox, whose will is found in Goochland Co VA, dated 13 Mar 1785 and probated 19 Sep 1785. Named in the will were a son Edward, who received the land and all the livestock. Daughter Obedience Hilton received a Negro girl already in her possession. Daughter Glasre [or Glaphery] Davis received a Negro girl already in her possession. Son Henry Cox, got 30 shillings. Son John Cox, one shilling. Edward's daughter Salley, to receive a Negro girl, but if she doesn't survive, to go to her brother John. Edward's son Jesse to have the Negro Tom. Edward Cox to be executor. Wit: Jno. Robards, Stephen Murrell, John William. Robard & Williams proved the will.

There were at least two John Coxes present in Goochland at the about the same time - another John Cox left a will in Albemarle Co dated 5 Apr 1762 & presented in court 9 Sep 1762 - this John Cox named his children as William, Benjamin, Edward, Elizabeth, and Sarah Bard. Noel Burton was one of the witnesses of this will. Neither of the John Coxes of these two wills named a spouse so apparently both were widowed at the time of the writing of the wills. There is a deed in Goochland between John and Alyce Cox to Noel Burton, dated 13 Jun 1757 - since Noel Burton is again involved, probably the John Cox of the Albemarle Deed was married to an Alyce.
