DIED
On the 31st of July, at the residence of her father near St. James College, Miss Jane BREATHED, age 18 years, 4 months, and 14 days.
It is rarely that inexorable death seeks a more interesting subject, and one around whom the affection of friends and relatives more tenderly cluster than the deceased. She was a universal favorite with all who knew her, and it is but just to say that no selfish thought ever entered her mind. As a daughter she was obedient and affectionate, ever watchful of the welfare of her only remaining parent, whom she always looked up to and cheered under afflictions; as a sister kind and considerate; as a friend coureous and reliable; and as a Sunday School teacher her place was seldom vacant. Unusually fond her children, her little pupils nestled around her and drank in with avidity instruction which would fit them for heaven.
During her illness of five weeks she suffered much and patiently. Few murmurs, under her torturing disease, escaped her lips. she seemed resigned to her fate, and frequently during her sickness inquired for her pastor, with whom she desired to converse. Her system had received a hard shock a few months before at the death of a fond mother, from which never entirely rallied; and as her pastor beautifully said in his appropriate remarks at her funeral, her spirit hovered between heaven and earth - between her earthly parent and her sainted mother, clinging now to one, and yearning at times for the other, until at last, yielding to laws of nature it took its flight to Paradise, there to rest with those who had gone before her. A large concourse of sorrowing friends at her funeral gave evidence of the high regard in which she was held.
It was a sore trial to part with such a sweet daughter, around whom centered so many hopes and bright anticipations. She was a main prop in a scattered family. Youth, the ties of kindred, and the charms of the world could not keep her, for it was the will of God. It is difficult to understand why it should be so, but faith tells us it was for the best ...Our Savior said: "What I do now though knowest not, but thou shalt know hereafter."
To her deply distressed family we can only say: Trust in Him, bow in Christian resignation to the dispensation of that Being....
