Elizabeth [Meriwether]

( - )

From the Meriwether Society:
It was Elizabeth (Woodhouse? highly doubtful!) Meriwether who married Lt. Col. William Browne. The Surry County Order Book, 1671-1691 (p.302), in an item recorded 6 Jul 1680, which states: "...Exit. Corpus. Edward Napkin conffesseth Judgmt. to Lt. Coll. Wm. Browne as marryeing ye. Executrix of Mr. Ni. Meriwether "

...It seems proper to close out this generation before we leave. Wm. Browne, Sr.'s will was probated in Jul 1705 (Griffith, pp.32-33). He does not recognize a wife, Elizabeth apparently having died before 1705. When? Possibly as early as 1686 when Nicholas II, apparently in possession of lands, is first taxed. More probably in the period 1692-1695 . There would have been no need to have siblings appointed as administrators for William's estate or for Thomas to select a guardian had Elizabeth been alive in 1695. Nicholas II's decision ca. 1692 to leave Surry Co. and sell his inherited Meriwether home may well have been triggered by his mother's death and the final distribution of his father's estate (Haun V, p.25 & Hopkins, p.39). In any case, Francis II selling Island House in 1695 and Thomas asking for a guardian the same year, suggest strongly that by then Nicholal I's estate was settled. Elizabeth, if born in 1638 (NHM, p.28) would have been in her fifties when she died ca. 1692.

William Browne's will was dated 4 Dec 1704; proved 3 Jul 1705.
In the 1705 will of William Browne he names son William Browne (in England at the writing of Will); son Henry Browne; daughter Ann Flood wife of Walter Flood; daughter Priscilla Blunt wife of Thomas Blunt; Grandson William son of William Browne and wife Jane; Grandson Henry Browne son of William Browne and wife Jane; Granddaughter Jane Browne dau of William and Jane now less than 18 years; Grandson John Flood; Grandchild Walter Flood; Grandchild Fortune Flood; Grandchild Mary Flood; Grandchild Ann Flood; Granddaughter Jane Jordan; Grandaughter Mary Sowerby wife of Francis Sowerby; Grandchild Mary Jordan, the younger; Grandchild William Blunt;

The will of Henry Hartwell - once of Virginia but died in England, 1699. Makes gifts to nieces and nephews of his unnamed wife which include the Meriwether children of Elizabeth and a daughter by her second husband, William Browne. Some believe this to have been Henry Hartwell's second wife - but there is really no proof of a first wife. She has been arbitrarily called Jane - but this name does not appear in any known record.
