"Jonathan Holmes, son of Rev. Obadiah and Katherine (Hyde) Holmes, was
born near Manchester, England in 1633/4. He married in Portsmouth,
Rhode Island in May 1664, Sarah, daughter of Richard Borden. Shortly
after his marriage he joined his sister's [[ Lydia ]] family (she had
married Captain John Bowne) in Gravesend, Long Island and there their
first child was born. From there he removed to Middletown, East Jersey
in 1667 where in 1677 he owned 797 acres. In 1668 he was deputy to the
General Assembly but at the November session his seat was vacant as he
declined to take the oath demanded. In 1673 he was chosen Captain of
the Militia. After eighteen years residence in new Jersey he returned
to Newport, Rhode Island in 1691, 1696, 1707 and in 1696-1703 was
speaker of the House of Deputies. His will was made in 1705 and proved
November 2, 1713, in which he mentions his daughter Sarah Slade. His
wife died in 1708 and their grave stones were standing in 1915. Issue:
