Melvina Garner

(1851 - 1906)

There is a question whether or not Melvina belongs in this family. Although she is in some databases, she isn't in the Garner database at
http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~sturm/garner.htm
She is not in censuses with the family. Her father had not yet married in 1850. Alfred was born Oct of 1851 and Austin was born May of 1853, if the right information is in the 1900 census. Melvina gave her age as 19 in 1870 and age 29 in 1880 - consistent with a birth in 1851. Yet her death certificate gave her father as Vincent Garner and her mother as Julia. Could she have been Alfred's twin?

Melvina married Enos Hutson, son of John Hutson, also of Delaware Co IN. He was born 1840, died 1906.

1860 Census. IN, Delaware Co
John Hutson was age 45, born Ohio. Wife Martha J. was 26, born Indiana Obviously Martha J. was a second marriage as the children, all born in Indiana, were Enos age 19, Lewis 16, the third child, a male, was 12 - his name is unreadable. Sarah was age 9, Mary E. age 3, Louisa age 1, and Columbus as 2 months.. From the ages of the children, it would appear that only the three youngest children were those born to Martha J.

1870 Census. IN, Delaware Co
Enos Hutson was age 29. Malvina age 19, and daughter Elenora age 1.
John Hutson was on the same page, now age 56. Martha J. was 35. Children listed with them were Sarah E. age 18, Rosa A age 6, Thadeus S. age 3, and Ida B. age 1. It would seem that all three of the children born to Martha prior to 1860 had died before 1870.

1880 Census. IN, Delaware Co
Enos Hutson, age 39, b. IN. He didn't give the birthplace of his parents. Melvina, wife, age 29, born IN as were both her parents. Children are Nora A. age 10, Lora M. age 9, and William V. age 1. A nephew, Willis McLaughlin, age 13, was living with them.
Enumerated next was John Huston, age 66, born Ohio, his parents born in NC. Martha J. was now 45, b. IN, her parents parn Tenn. Thadius S. was 12 and Ida B. age 11. Joseph L. ?McCalicter was age 11, living with the family as a farm hand. Also there was a Jane Adamson in the household. She was age 25 and had a child Verla, age 11 months who had been born in July, presumably July of 1879.

They are buried Jones Cemetery, Muncie, Delaware, IN.
A son William Vincent Hutson, b. 15 Sep 1878, Muncie, died 8 Sep 1948 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co, IN and is buried there in Rest Haven Memorial Park.
