JOHN Benton

(1595 - 12 Feb 1661)

It has been supposed that John is the son of Andrew & Mary Benton. There is no baptismal record for John at Epping Parish. They were certainly the parents of Edward, the immigrant, and John's son Andrew apparently came with Edward or at practically the same time to America. Given names of some of the children reinforce this theory.

It cannot be ruled out that this John was the John Benton who was baptized 14 Apr 1588, whose father Andrew was born in 1548 and inherited by will in 1569, the manor of Shingle Hall at Epping - this Andrew's father John had become the owner in 1552. Nothing further has been found about the John born 1588, as he was not named in the will of his father in 1639. There is a record of a John Benton who married the widow Searle in 1616.

Children of John and Mary baptized:
Andrew, 16 Oct 1620
Thomas, 25 Aug 1622
Marie 29 Jun 1625
Elizabeth 31 Aug 1628
[Register hiatus of 8 years]
John, baptized 10 Mar 1639.

There are burials recorded as John Benton on 12 Feb 1662, and the widdow Benton on 5 Jun 1665, but no surety they were the same as this couple.

The BENTON GENEALOGY gives the date of the burial of Mary Southernwood Benton as 26 May 1660.

It is believed that the Andrew baptized 16 Oct 1620 is the same as Andrew Benton, the emigrant, is because:
...his tombstone in Hartford gives his age as 63 years at his death, 31 Jul 1683, which agrees with the baptism date
...Andrew named three sons, two of whom died in infancy, John
...Andrew's second daughter was named Mary.

In the book GENEALOGY: FOUR FAMILY OF LINES OF WILLIAM A. BENTON I, 1906-1978 by Ezra Reed Benton II, he has printed an article "Trans-Atlantic Bentons" at least some of which was compiled by Charles E. Benton [misprint - should have been Charles H.] prior to 1906. Some research had been down in London by Mr. Charles H. Benton.

It is claimed that there were two men, Edward Benton & Andrew Benton, who were uncle and nephew and came to America in 1638, probably to Wethersfield, CT. Possibly they came with Sir Richard Saltonstall who was strengthening that colony [Saltonstall came in 1630.]. In April of 1939, Andrew Benton, son of John, was one of a party from Wethersfield who with the Rev. Peter Prudden, settled Milford, ten miles west of New Haven, CT. In the same year, or at least by 1940, Edward Benton removed from Wethersfield to Guilford, CT. Edward's son, Edward, was baptized Epping Parish in England on 27 Jan 1638. The Guilford, CT records show a daughter born there in Sep 1640 and further state that Edward Benton was from Westhersfield.
