THE HISTORY of PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY VIRGINIA
CHAPTER VIII PITTSYLVANIA BECOMES A COUNTY IN 1767
It was not an unusual thing to have a convict schoolmaster, since men were shipped to Virginia and sold into servitude for political offenses and for debt. These white servants were known as "indentured", for after serving their masters for a certain number of years they became free. An instance of indentured servitude is given in the court minutes of May, 1768, when Champness Terry came into court and declared Matthew Durham and Jane his wife to be set free, although they were due him one year's service. Mr. Terry for some reason gave Durham and his wife one year of their servitude, his generosity probably being a reward for faithful duty."

Will dated 14 Sep. 1775, probated in 96th Dist., SC - SC Records of Wills, Vol. 17, Book B, p. 373. They had migrated from PittsylvaniaCo., VA to the 96th by November, 1770. There, Champness was Colonel of the Militia and represented his district in the assembly.
