Individual Details
Ann Hope Thomas
(5 Jan 1861 - 19 Feb 1947)
In 1870, the child "age 12" was listed as Nancy. Ages were exaggerated somewhat in this census. There had been no daughter born by 1860. In 1880 there was a daughter Hope, age 19, who would appear to be the child listed as Nancy in 1870. Her marriage record lists her as A. Hope Thomas - probably her name was Ann Hope - Nancy is often the nickname for Ann.
I think this is the daughter who married a Gravely - she seems to be the only one old enough to have married and mothered the two Gravely grandsons with their grandmother in 1900. Hope Thomas and Henry Clay Gravely were in fact 1st cousins.

Richard Gravely, grandson, b. Sep 1885, age 14.
Note: the enumerator mistakenly marked Catherine & Suzanne - their surname was Thomas - they were unmarried daughters.
R. P. Gravely did considerable research on the family - son of the Richard P. in the 1900 census. An online database gives Richard P. Gravely as the son of Henry Clay Gravely and Hope Thomas. The grandsons Ben & Richard counted twice in this census. Instructions to the enumerator where always to state who was present in the household - perhaps they were visiting their grandparents on the day of the census.
