Ancestry.com and FamilySearch note a marriage for Joshua Mabry to Polly Horton, 3 Feb 1841, Grayson Co, VA. Said to be the daughter of James Horton & Sarah Goad.

1850. Joshua Maybry, age 29, Wheelwright. Polly 24. Susan 4, and James J. 2.

In the 1860 census is Joshua age 38, Wheelwright. Mary age 31. Children: Susanna age 15, James J. 13, Sarah J. 11, Louisa R. 9, LeGrand 7, and Milly E. age 1.

"He was a captain in the Civil War and had a blacksmith shop east of Hillsville." (Alderman, 1850 Census: Annotated, p.6)
According to John Perry Alderman, "Joshua Mabry was a volunteer, joining September 15, 1861 at Dugspur. He served with the company (G, 54th Virginia Infantry) for nearly a year, but was discharged for a long ailment on August 15, 1862. Later he was in the 4th Virginia Reserves and was commissioned Captain." ( The Carroll County Chronicles, Winter, 1989, p.7)

In 1870, Joshua gave his age as 48, a wagon maker. Polly was 45. Children: Sarah J. 18, Rachel L. [Louisa] 15, Legrand 13, Elizabeth [Milly E.] age 10,
and Joseph Petta age 6.

Rachel L. Mabry, age 19, daughter of Joshua & Mary, married Newell Horton, age 23, son of Henry & Susannah Horton, 12 Dec 1872, Carroll Co VA.
Sarah Jane Mabry, age 22, daughter of Joshua & Mary, married David T. Edmunds, age 20, son of David & Elizabeth Edmunds, on 23 Jan 1873, Carroll Co VA.
LeGrand Mabry, age 19, son of Joshua & Mary, married Julia Ann Susan Mabry, age 15, daughter of Elizabeth Mabry, 28 Jan 1874, Carroll Co VA.
Note: Julia Ann, age 11, was living with Elizabeth Mabry in 1870 - possibly Joshua's youngest sister because in 1860 both were with Joshua's parents. Elizabeth is not found with a spouse, she could have been married to a Mabry cousin but all indications are that she was a single mother.

1880 Census. Legrand Mabry was now age 24, a Farmer. Julia Ann his wife. Children: Victorine age 5, David Walter age 3. Legrand was living next door to his grandfather Isaac. FindAGrave page lists wife Julia Ann Susan Mabry, daughter of Elizabeth Mabry, born, 30 Nov 1859 - death unknown, but probably buried Horton Cemetery, Sunnyside, Carroll Co VA.

Legrand & Julia lost several young children as evidenced from Carroll Co Death Records:
1876. James S. Mabry died 23 May 1876. Cause unknown. Age 6 months. Parents: Legrand & ___ Mabry.
1890. Lenora Mabry died 30 May 1890. Cause: flux. Age 6. Parents Legran & July Ann.
1890. Patsy Mabry died 31 May 1890. Cause: fever. Age 4. Parents, Legran & July Ann
1890. O. Hayse Mabry [female] died 3 Jun 1890. Cause: flux. Age 1. Parents: Legran & July Ann
1893. Elizabeth Mabry died 10 Jul 1893. Age 1 month, 14 days. Parents: Legran & Julia A. Mabry.
This daughter lived a long life.

Daughter Louisa Rachel Mabry Horton, b. 1854, Dugspur, Carroll Co, VA, d. 1940 in Dugspur. Daughter of Joshua & Mary. Married Newell B. Horton, 12 Dec 1872, Carroll Co. Newell was born 1849, died 1928. Buried Martin Cemetery, Hillsville, Carroll Co, VA.
