Barnard Payton Turman
(3 Nov 1841 - 15 Jun 1926)
Bernard "Payton" married on 11 Jan 1866 to Nancy Gardner, daughter of James Gardner and Emily Dalton. Nancy was born 16 May 1844, died 11 Mar 1944. Payton joined the Confederate Armny on 16 Sep 1861 at Dugspur in Co G, 54th VA, the company of his uncle George Hylton Turman. He was captured in GA on 16 May 1864, sent to prison camp at Rock Island IL, and released 20 Mar 1865.
1870 Census. Laurel Fork Dist, Gladesboro P.O., Household 257. Barnard Turman gave his age as 24, Nancy as 25. Children were Sarah E. 3 and Henry C. age 1. Also living with them was his grandmother, Mary F. Mabry, age 73.
Payton lived on family land.
Charles Mabry deeded to his son Samuel, 80 acres of land. Grayson Co DB 10, p.43 [Charles was Lucy Mabry grandfather & Payton's great-grandfather]
Samuel then deeded this 80 acres along with another tract of 36 acres to his nephew-in-law Christopher Turman on 6 Aug 1853. Carroll Co DB 3, p.75 - this deed mentions pointers at Joshua G. Mabry, Joseph J. Mabry, E. Turman, Jesse Montgomery
Christopher Turman then transferred the same 80 acres, then known as the "Meeting House Tract" [the Quakers may have had their meeting there] on 17 Jan 1880 ot his son Payton.
