Joseph served in Lt. James Long's Company, 3rd Regt of the SC Militia during the Sar of 1812. His residence was given as Sumter District, SC. He was discharged at Charleston, 80 miles from his residence. He served as a subsitute for Sherwood Tisdale.

Joseph's family was counted in 1820 in Sumter, SC. He was in Montgomery Co AL for the 1840 and 1850 censuses.

His wife's given name was Jane. Most of Joseph's children were on the 1860 census for Montgomery Co but he was not found. There were eight children: Huldah, Jacob, Lewis, Mary, Edward, Martha, Eliza, and Keziah.
