Sarah Jones

(17 Jul 1714 - 1796)

From John Bennett Boddie in HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES I (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co 1967) 35:
"The close association between Edward Jones and William Kendrick probably indicates that Edward was a brother of Sarah Jones, William's wife. If so, they were probably the children of Rebecca West, widow of the Lower Parish of Isle of Wight Co., VA, who on Nov 21, 1719 made a deed of gift to her four children, Edward Jones, Obedience Jones, James Jones (when he is 20, he being 11 years old in Feb next") and Sarah Jones (she being 5 years old last July) Isle of Wight Great Book P 311. There is so far no clue to the name of Rebecca West's first husband Jones nor her second husband West...The names of Rebecca, Obedience, James and Sarah all occur in the families of both Edward and William Kendrick, which strengthens the above view. The deed shows that Sarah Jones was born July 1714, which makes a slight discrepancy as 1715 is given as birth--date of Sarah Jones Kendrick by her grandson Richard Fox. However this discrepancy does not seem too serious. There was an Edward Jones of Isle of Wight County who married Deborah, daughter of William Exum, and died 1730, leaving among other heirs, a son Edward and a daughter Sarah (Chapman,Wills I 60 and II 53); but the family names do not correspond so well, so that it is probably that this older Edward Jones was an uncle of Edward Jones of Granville Co NC and Sarah Jones Kendrick."
From a letter preserved by the Virginia Historical Society of Mrs J C Duckworth of Williamston, SC, dated 15 Dec 1930...in the Savedge files:
"Sarah Jones was of Surry Co., VA. I am positive for Hon. Greene Kendrick of Conn gathered material for a complete History of the Kendick family with all collateral lines included in England and history was his hobby. Most unfortunately he died before he had his data published and his wife and daughter have never carried out his plans yet though it is hoped they will some day. In every letter of inquiry the information has been this: That Sara Jones was of Surry Co., VA, b. 1715 and was daughter of Richard Jones. Another letter had her daughter of Robert Jones but that letter was written from memory and doubtless this was a careless mistake..for a WM & Mary Quarterly says Robert Jones son of Rev. Roland Jones first pastor of Old Bruton Church the old Court Church of the colonies at Williamsburt, VA, died without issue and I believe the record said he died in 1694. That was before Sarah Jones was born in 1715. All records show her to have been a first cousin of mother of Martha Washington. Martha's mother was Frances Jones daughter of Orlando Jones son of Rev. Rowland Jones just mentioned." --Mrs Duckworth states positively that Sarah married in the fall of 1730...Marriage took place in King William Co., VA, where the Kendricks lived.
From the Application of Capt. James Dinkins, member of the Sons of the American Revolution from Louisiana, State# 165 and National# 26,300, taken from the genealogy of Greene Kendrick, whose father, was Govenor of Connecticut in 1853: "William Kendrick was born in King County, Virginia in 1704 and his wife Sarah Jones of Suffolk, was born in 1735. Sarah Jones was a first cousin to Martha Jones Dandridge, mother of Martha Washington."
1793- May 23 Her will is recorded in Warren Co Will Book #8 pp 236-238; probated Feb. 1796. (Book 8, page 236)Family Record of their grandson Richard Fox...Family Bible gives dates.
Another death place, Edgecombe (became Warren later), from K Sherling Wynne, 4151 Appomatox Lane, Birmingham AL 35213.Will dated 23 May 1793; probated Feb. Court 1796.
