Note: no son Wellington Cochran is indicated as a child of Hannah - she has not been documented as married to a Cochran. However in 1860:
1860 Census. Clear Creek Twp, Fairfield, OH
W.C. Cochran age 34 b. in Ohio
Isabella 35 born in Ohio
Charles age 3
Daniel age 1
Hannah Reynolds age 65 born in Canada
Mary Smith, age 16 (birth year would be 1844) born in Ohio (this is Hannah's granddaughter, born to her daughter Lydia Suiter. Lydia was born 1821 - Cochran about 1826 if the above age is correct.)

Here is Hannah's story, shared by Charissa Webber, October 2009.

Hannah was a tough nut to crack, so thanks to Lucile Marshall for her good detective work. Without research from Patsy Kishler, we probably wouldn't have been able to patch Hannah's life together.

BEGINNINGS IN CANADA
Hannah was born ca. 1794-1795 to Mary and Frederick Wurtsbaugh.
Hannah, as well as her sister, Judea Wurtsbaugh, were born in Canada. Judea md George Waggoner in Fairfield Co. Ohio and moved to Indiana. Census records and a History of Sangamon County Indiana verify that Judea was born in Canada. Hannah also states on two censuses that she was born in Canada. Sorry to not give credit for the following, taken from the internet:

3-10-1826 - David Metzer vs John Holtzberry. Filed 10-21-1825. Nicholas Holtsberry, late of Licking Co., dec'd. Widow, Catharine entitled to 24 acres dower. Land, 90 acres N part S 1/2 Section 11, Township 19, Range 17 of Refugee tract. Eleven heirs: Jacob Holtsberry, Samuel Holtsberry, Ann Holtsberry now Ann Kenney, Richard Holtzberry, Conrad Holtzberry, Sally wife of Isaac Harter, Polly wife of John Woolard, Elizabeth Green, a widow, late Holtsberry, Susanna wife of John Wertzbaugh; John Holts
Licking County Partition Records

We see that Hannah and Judea's brother, John, married Susanna Holtsberry. The "Refugee Tract" mentioned is land that Canadians who had served in the war for the U.S. were given. I assume the Wurtsbaughs were also living in the Refugee Tract, given that they had come from Canada.

FIRST MARRIAGE
Licking County Ohio marriage records show that Hannah Watsbaugh married William Suiter 26 March 1820

1820 CENSUS LICKING COUNTY
William Suiter 1 male 26-45
1 female 0-10; 1 female 16-26; 1 female
over 45
*the female is an infant, my ancestor,
Lydia Suiter
(We see that William Suiter is nowhere to be found after the 1820 census and presumably died.)

Mary Wartsbaugh 0 males
1 female 0-10; 1 female 26-45; 1 female
over 45

John Wartsbaugh 1 male 0-10; 1 male 16-26;
2 females 0-10; 1 female 16-26
(John's birthdate has been given as 4 October 1793 in Ohio. Birthplace is up for debate)

SIBLINGS
We've established Judea (born ca 3 Jan 1789, died 3 Jan 1863-4, Petersburg, Illinois) and John as siblings, but her brother David helps us trace her tracks to her next home.

David Wurtsbaugh is a minor in 1817 and his father is listed as Fredrich Wortzbach. David married Magdalena Kesler, daughter of David and Susanna Nigh Kesler in Fairfield Co. Ohio.

**NOW THINGS GET TRICKY**
There are records in Fairfield County Ohio showing there was a certain Hannah (surname previously unknown) who had married a John Seidner/Sidnor/Sidener and then married a Stewart Levi Reynolds. It was believed that Seidner's wife died around 1806 and he married this Hannah, born in 1794, in 1807. When she was about 13? And he had children around her age? I really don't think so. In 1820, Seidner has a wife who is over 45 - I believe it was either his first wife, reportedly an Elizabeth, or maybe someone else. But not the same wife he has in 1830. The wife named Hannah who later marries Stewart Levi Reynolds.

1830 MADISON TWP. FAIRFIELD COUNTY OHIO CENSUS
David Wurtsbaugh is on this census showing:
1 male 20-30
1 female 15-20; 1 female 60-70 (his mother perhaps?)

John Sidner
2 males 0-5; 1 male 60-70
1 female 5-10 (Lydia); 1 female 30-40 (Hannah)

MORE ABOUT DAUGHTER LYDIA, TO UNDERSTAND HANNAH
Lydia, the baby in the 1820 Licking county census had an illegitimate son, John when she was about 15 (see info. below) At some point she apparently marries an unknown Smith, as our first record of her shows her as Lydia Smith marrying John Scritchlow. The marriage to Scritchlow occured 28 Nov 1847, Fairfield Ohio. Oral history per my grandmother in Ohio, who was told by her mother, that Lydia had indeed married a Scritchlow. This was also confirmed by another descendant in a different state, Sandy Perry, through oral history by her relative. There is no question that Lydia Suiter eventually became a Scritchlow. Her short time of being a Smith definitely helped to crack the case, however!

1840 MADISON TOWNSHIP, FAIRFIELD COUNTY OHIO
1 male 0-5; 1 male 5-10; 1 male 70-80
1 female 15-20 (Lydia); 1 female 50-60 (Hannah) (she should have been 46, so this is the wrong column)

LYDIA'S SON JOHN
Lydia's son, John Suiter, was born 21 December 1835. He is the male 0-5, and Lydia is 19 at this point. John Suiter was the grandfather of my grandmother, and through her oral history, she had stated that her grandfather had spoken of how hard it had been to be an illegitimate child.
John married Mary Hoffman on 13 September 1866, daughter of Samuel Hoffman and Catharine Kramer, in Fairfield Ohio.

JOHN SEIDNER DIES
He died on 27 Aug 1841 at the age of 79 in Tarlton (near),
Fairfield/Pickaway County, Ohio, USA.12 He was buried after 27 Aug 1841 in Tarlton Cemetery, Salt Creek Township,
Pickaway County, Ohio, USA (probably).13 John had his estate probated in May 1842 in Fairfield County Probate Court,
Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA. Estate #1885. Late of Clearcreek Township. Hannah Sidener, administrator. Note in estate record: Widow married a Reynolds by 1843. Receipt in file dated February 1842 signed by Hannah. No children named. (THANK YOU PATSY KISHLER!)

HANNAH'S MARRIAGE TO REYNOLDS
Marriage records show that Hannah Seidner married Stewart Reynolds 7 August 1843 in Fairfield, Ohio.

1850 CLEARCREEK, FAIRFIELD COUNT OHIO CENSUS
Stewart Reynolds age 66 born in PA
Hannah Reynolds age 56 born in Canada

1850 DEERCREEK CENSUS
John and Lydia Scritchlow with John (born 1835), William (born 1840), Mary (born 1844), Richard (born 1846) Hannah (born 1848)
We must assume Mary and William are Smiths, as she hasn't married Scritchlow until 1847. Maybe Richard is, too, but he goes through his life calling himself a Scritchlow. None of the children are given different surnames on this census, but son John goes by Suiter all his life.

STEWART REYNOLDS DIES
Stewart then dies (February) 17, 1856, aged 72 years 9 months 9 days and per Patsy Kishler's info., states in his will that Wellington Cochran, a "stepson" will be able to get his property after they both pass on if he takes care of Hannah and Stewart during the rest of their lives.

1860 CLEARCREEK TOWNSHIP, FAIRFIELD OHIO CENSUS
W.C. Cochran age 34 b. in Ohio
Isabella 35 born in Ohio
Charles age 3
Daniel age 1
Hannah Reynolds age 65 born in Canada
MARY SMITH age 16 (birth year would be 1844) born in Ohio

This Mary Smith would be Lydia's daughter and Hannah's granddaughter.

ISABELLA COCHRAN
Isabella was born to Daniel Hoffman and Margaret Seidner (1st md a Stukey). (Parents marriage date: 30 September 1824, Fairfield, Ohio) Daniel Hoffman is a half brother to John Suiter's father-in-law, Samuel Hoffman md to Catharine Kramer. Isabella and W.C. (Wellington) divorced (his second divorce) and Hannah later leaves her estate to Isabella. Wellington no longer appears on any censuses after 1860 and it's likely he is dead before Hannah dies.

LYDIA MOVES ON TO SHELBY ILLINOIS
John Scritchlow died between 1860-1870 and, after appearing on censuses in Fairfield (1860 and 1870) about 1872 Lydia moves to Shelby, Illinois. John Suiter lived there from March 1873 to May 1875, before returning to Ohio. We don't know what happened to William and Mary Smith. Hannah [Lydia] added three more children to her family in Ohio - Elizabeth, born about 1851, Nelson, born about 1853 and Theodore, born about 1856 [and Samuel, born 1859]. We can find all the Scritchlow children with her in Shelby.

I SUBMIT TO THE JURY...
Years ago I had made a notation that Hannah Reynolds was the only Canadian I had found in Fairfield County Ohio on the 1860 census. Her native home coupled with corresponding ages that appear in line with censuses and the fact that she is living in the same township as her mother and brother most likely (1830)and in the same home with her granddaughter (1860), convinces me that she is the Hannah Wurtsbaugh of Licking County. If there is anything anyone can add to validate or prove me wrong, I am open to it ).
