Joseph Brown Jr.

Joseph enlisted at the age of 16 and served various tours. He served under Capt Alexander Moore and Col. Sevier. Was in the battles of Brier Creek in Georgia and King's Mountain. He was married to Jemina Broyles at the home of her father Adam Broyles in 1781 or 1782. This was in North Carolina at the time, but now Tennessee. They lived on the Chucky [Nolichucky] River.

They lived in Pendleton District SC for about 8 years and then moved to Franklin Co GA on the Tugaloo River. Joseph died there but was buried in Pendleton District. Jemima Broyles Brown married John Robertson/Robinson in Granklin Co GA in 1818; he died in Aug of 1826.
Jemima applied for Joseph Brown's Revolutionary pension on 5 Mar 1845 when she was 80 years of age. She was living with her son Aaron in Lumpkin Co GA. She was married to Joseph Brown sometime in the year 1781 by a Prebyterian Clergyman in NC, now TN. Joseph Died in Oct of 1800 in Franklin Co GA, now Habersham Co. She married John Robertson in 1818 and he died in Aug of 1826. William P. Reid, age 43, and Joseph J. Sinleton age 56, residents of Lumpkins Co had known her for the past ten years or more and she is of respectable character and remains a widow.

On 20 Mar 1855, Jemima, aged 90, Pensioner, applied for bounty land to which she might be entitled under the act of 30 Mar 1855, never having received bounty land nor made prior application.
Edny Arrowwood & James Shed, residents of Lumpkin Co stated they knew Jemima to be the person she represented herself to be.

Daughter Elizabeth married in Pendleton District SC in Oct of 1799 to Joseph Williams, who in 1846 was aged 67 and living in Polk Co TN. James Drummond stated there were never any records of Marriages kept in SC but they were married there because Mr. & Mrs. Brown were opposed to the marriage. Mr. Brummonds, being Williams' brother-in-law, helped him "steal" her and taking her over the river to SC.

Testimony of Aaron Broyles of Anderson Distrct SC stated that he knew Joseph Brown to have been a soldier of the Revolution and in the Battle of Kings Mountain, maybe under Col. Williams. He may have been present at their marriage, but was small at the time and is not sure. They were married in his father's house in Washington Co NC, now TN. The deposition was given on 11 Apr 1845 to William Holland.

The Testimony of William Clark taken in Hall Co GA was apparently lost in Washington, but he died before the testimony could be taken again. His son John Clark testified that his father had made testimony to him, a Justice of the Peace, in Mar of 1843 in Hall Co. William Clark had known Joseph Brown a great number of years and knew him before his intermarriage with Jemima. He knew Joseph had served under Genl. Marion in SC and had served with him and also in several scouting expeditions against the Cherokee and Creek Indians. He knew Jemima well. John Clark said he knew of the death of Joseph Brown when he was about 8 years old and knew he died on the Tugalo Rive in GA but was buried in Pickens District, SC. He had heard his father speak of Joseph Brown and having served with him in the Revolution under Genl. Marion. William Hall died on 4 Jun 1843 William P. Reid, a Baptist Minister also agreed with the above testimony - no relationship was stated. 8 Mar 1848, Lumpkin Co GA

Testimony of Mrs. Violet Reed, aged 76 years stated that was acquainted with both. She recollected that Joseph was a soldier of the Revolution and served under Col. Sevier. She was not present at their marriage but believes it took place in 1781 and she was acquainted with both. Joseph died in 1800. 22 Feb 1845. Hall Co GA.
Violet testified again on 3 Mar 1846 in Gainesville, Hall Co. Age 78 years. She was acquainted with Jemima and Joseph Brown when they were married at Adam Broyles house on Chucky River. Joseph, deponent's brother, was between 22 and 23 years of age. Their father was not willing to the marriage and would not let her attend. She has in her posession a record of the age of Joseph Brown. Joseph Dunagin, Justice of Inferior Court stated he had known Violet Reed for some 46 years past and believed her to be a credible witness.

Jemima Robinson formerly the widow of Joseph Brown who died in 1800 and was a Private in the Company commanded by Capt Alexander Moore of the Regt commanded by Col. Sevier in the NC Militia for 18 months, received a pension of $60 on 16 Mar 1850.
