Anderson Co Texas Genealogical Society
"The site of the rugged old BRUSHY CREEK ARBOR, built in a grove of beautiful native trees within a few steps of a native spring, approximately 12 miles north of Palestine near the junction of farm roads 315 and 837, deserves special mention as it has been the scene of an annual homecoming for the last 126 years since its inception in 1870. The Arbor was built by the following individuals: the brothers James D. ELROD, Benjamin L. ELROD, John Calhoun ELROD, and George McDuffie ELROD who came from South Carolina before 1860, Moses H. ADDINGTON from Georgia by 1857, Abner CARROLL from South Carolina, Billy BELL from Mississippi c1856, Daniel HENDERSON from Mississippi, William "Billy" HERRINGTON from Mississippi c1851, Chesley MURPHY from South Carolina by 1858, Dr. Charles MURPHY from South Carolina, John EVANS from Tennessee, Tom BROWN, Will BROWN, Leander Lusk EVANS from Tennessee, Samuel EVANS, Mr. WEBB, Mr. THORNAL, Mr. RHODES, Capt. Descendants of these pioneer BRUSHY CREEK families, along with descendants of other pioneer families such as BERRY, CELY, EMERSON, MITCHELL, MORROW, MURPHY, PICKLE, ROGERS, TERRELL, WADDELL, WELBORN and others, gather for an all day meeting on LABOR DAY weekend in the old Arbor once a year to listen to the speaking, and take part in an old fashioned dinner on the grounds."
